BFH Falcons View
January 17 to 21, 2022
Principal's Message
Dear Falcon students and families,
I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe throughout this latest wave of the pandemic. Last week I was extremely impressed by our students as they did a great job complying with a lot of heightened measures we instituted. I really can't say enough about how they have stepped up to help keep our community safe. To this point, we have had the rates of illness for staff and students remaining relatively stable throughout the first week back. Our student population had around approximately 10 to 13 percent reporting absences or illness, and our staff was in line with this as well. EIPS passed on a useful "Stay At Home" guide document that is a great reference to help determine when you should be keeping your child at home as we navigate through these uncertain times (I have included it below).
All of our students and staff had the opportunity last Friday during block two to receive a two week supply of medical grade masks and rapid test kits supplied by the provincial government. If your child was away, please have them report to the office to pick up their designated supply. If your child is still away ill or absent please contact the school's front office staff to set up a time for you to come in and arrange pick up.
The biggest challenge we will have moving into the last two days of regular classes and into the final assessment's week, will be dealing with student absences due to illness. Our goal as a division is to continue to allow students to have an opportunity to write these final assessments. Should a student be absent from their sitting of their assessment, we have set up alternative dates for students to be able to access a second opportunity after exam week has completed. This will allow our students and staff to be able to have choices available that will hopefully provide the fairest outcomes without penalizing them due to the current situation. Should your child be in a position where illness/COVID protocol does not allow them to attend their final assessment sitting please have them contact their teacher by email to develop a plan as to how they will proceed.
As always please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Course on Computer Concepts Exam
Any Grade 11s or 12s interested in competing in the CCC exam should contact Mrs. Langlois. Any students applying to Waterloo or other Ontario schools for STEM should consider writing this exam, but it is beneficial for anyone interested in computing no matter where they will be applying.

Falcon's Basketball Set to Resume this Week
Beginning this Monday, EIPS has made the decision for a cautious return to athletics. Our Falcon’s basketball teams will resume this week on Monday, and throughout the exam week we will have some light practices for our teams.

Final Assessments in 2022
As detailed in the communication from the Elk Island Public School division, it is imperative that quality teaching and learning continues to be the focus and sound assessment is a part of quality teaching and learning. Final assessments for students will continue at the end of January. As stated Wednesday, Alberta Education has canceled January diploma examinations. Final assessments for all non-diploma courses will follow regular assessment plans that were in place previous to the announcement of diplomas being cancelled. Ultimately, we will modify these assessments to account for the three lost days of instruction to ensure these are fair to students. For 30 level courses, the final assessment will possibly consist of final unit exams, re-do/re-write of previous assessments, or a cumulative exam that would account for no more than 10 % of the final mark. Teachers at the 30 level will communicate specifics as we start this week. These assessments are another opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding while providing the teacher another key piece of evidence. As always, evidence based professional judgement is used when determining student final grades.

Check out their video submission below of their project!
Heightened Need for Proper Masking!
As the omicron virus becomes prevalent through our region, it becomes even more important for each of our students to make the effort to ensure they are properly wearing their masks to protect themselves and our school community. Wearing your mask around your chin or below your nose simply isn't good enough. Please touch base with your child about the importance of doing their part.
