EPSD9 School Board, October Recognition of Shady Cove School Staff and Students
The following students and staff were recognized at a recent assembly for their outstanding work by our School Board.
Words from Shady Cove School:
Leilana Levario
Leilana has attended SCS for the past 6 years. She started with us in Kindergarten and is now in 5th grade. As one of her former teachers, Ms. Nodine said she is just an all around stellar scholar. Leilanna is responsible, reliable, dependable and one of a kind. She goes beyond what is expected and challenges herself. We appreciate what a great role model you are for the rest of our scholars! Keep up the good work!
Destanee Carroll
Destanee has attended SCS since 4th grade and is now currently one of our 8th graders. Being a middle school scholar is not always an easy thing. Middle School Scholars are trying to figure out who they are and often that is challenging. However, as an 8th grader, Destanee has stood out. Mrs. Wade shared that Destanee has been really doing well so far this year. She is always on task, rarely needs redirection, and is just quietly awesome and persistently tries to get better at each skill being addressed. Destanee is not just putting her all in the classroom but also a leader on the volleyball court. Destanee, we are so proud of you!
Pepa Cortez
Ms. Pepa has been with our school district and specifically Shady Cove School for the past 22 years on and off. She started out supporting preschool up at Elk Trail with Mrs. Triller and then moved to Shady Cove School. She has supported every grade level and even a Pathways program. She is now our attendance secretary and is doing such a great job. She is the first face that people see when they come in and what a great attitude and smile she always has on. She is such an asset to our school and we appreciate you!
Haley Lile
Mrs. Lile has just been with us a short two years but it feels like she has been with us so much longer. I am so appreciative of all she does for our scholars both inside and outside the classroom. She continues to hone her teaching skills and is always looking for ways to improve her instruction, whether it be going to a math training or an AVID training. She is on our PBIS committee and has helped to create a structure for our Tier 2 team. Mrs. Lile is always willing to jump in and help wherever she it needed. Thank you for all you do!
Career Technical Education at EPHS
Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge, and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners. CTE prepares these learners for the world of work by introducing them to workplace competencies and making academic content accessible to students by providing it in a hands-on context. Visit www.eaglepnt.k12.or.us/ephs for a current list of CTE classes offered through EPHS.
CTE classes are offered in the following fields: Agriculture, Manufacturing, Auto Shop, and
Business/Computer/Communications Technology. Within these categories, students can participate in a wide range of educational experiences. Many CTE classes have a clear path to a career in a related field, post-graduation.
EPHS students enroll in CTE classes for a wide range of reasons with many benefits. EPSD9 recently conducted a few student interviews in a couple CTE classes to gather their perspective regarding why these classes are of interest.
Robotics Engineering
Madison is a senior taking Robotics Engineering for the first time. Madison was very interested in the class and wanted to explore engineering. She plans on staying in engineering classes all year and really enjoys how the class challenges her. Madison intends to join the military post-graduation. This class gives her an opportunity to gain some related experiences and education. She hopes to further her education in a similar field when she joins.
Benjamin and Lucas are in Robotics Engineering class for the first time this year. Both students are sophomores and are very interested in the building side of robotics. One of the elements of the class is to build and operate your own functioning robot! Once completed, each team competes by driving their robot through a course with specific obstacles and actions for the robot to execute. Their team has won both rounds of competition thus far!
Graphic Production
Kahare is a sophomore at EPHS and was very intrigued when he saw the class in the curriculum guide. He has always wanted to learn how to make publications, like posters, with Adobe software. Kahare feels that design is a great skill that can be used in many places. He shared, "Every term for two years, I've taken a graphic design class. I even went to SOU and met the graphic lead and got some advice. If this isn't my full-time job, this will be a big part of it.”
Tanyon is in graphic design as well and really enjoys the fun and comfortable environment. He said, “I really like the creating element of the class. I enjoy doing game design and coding, and this would be great for designing a cover and other publications. I really like being in Mr. Morgan's class and learning how to design and have fun.”
Audio/Visual Productions
Jessey, is a sophomore at EPHS and joined the Audio/Visual Production class because he had an interest in video photography. Jessey said, “My main interest was in learning what goes on behind the scenes and I like expanding my mind. This class is very educational.” Even though Jessey plans to enter the medical field after graduating EPHS, he really enjoys what the class offers him now.
Wyatt is a freshman and is taking Video Production for the first time. Wyatt took the class because he started his own Youtube channel as a hobby. He said, “The video class aligned with my interests and is everything I thought it would be. I will continue taking these classes for the rest of the year. I enjoy learning and it's a fun class.”
Payton is a freshman who Is taking the class for the first time. Payton’s interest is in the production side of the class. Payton said, “ The class helps a lot with public speaking. In order to be in front of the camera you have to know how to speak well.” Payton is glad he signed up for the class and is enjoying what he has learned so far.
Culinary Arts
Allen has taken a culinary class since his freshman year. Allen is passionate about cooking and he has always loved his time in the kitchen. He said, “I've done it for as long as I can remember. I’ve been teaching siblings how to cook as well. What I learn in this class I can take from here and use at home.”
Allen plans to stay enrolled in culinary classes until he graduates. Even though he doesn't plan on establishing a career in culinary post-graduation, it will always be a part of his life. Allen said, “For me, the class is very personal. I love being able to cook for my friends and family. If you’re new to it, don't be afraid to try it. I used to be really bad at cooking, and now look. Just stick with it."
Hugo has also participated in culinary classes since his freshman year. He said, “ I really enjoy my time here and it's my favorite elective. I find it very interesting and I really enjoy the environment. I tend to learn better hands-on and this class fits.”
Hugo believes the class is very self-empowering because cooking is a crucial life skill, even if you don't make it a career, it's a daily life need.”
Veterinary Science
Vet Medicine and Animal Anatomy classes offer onsite learning lessons for students to expand their knowledge about the agriculture industry. One recent experience included using an ultrasound machine to determine the pregnancy of cows.
One student shared, “I was totally nervous to do this. I didn’t think I was going to but I'm glad I did though. I believe it’s important to try something different, you never know if you’ll end up liking it.”
Auto
EPHS Auto classes offer a range of hands on learning opportunities for students. Some students shared that they enroll to learn how to repair or modify their own vehicles. Others stated that this class is inline with their path to the automotive industry and future careers. The class offers unique opportunities in automotive education and connects students with industry experiences.
CTE classes offer a wide range of experiences, opportunities, but most of all, they are FUN!
