Reading
I am sending home a Mid-quarter report to parents on Team Silver on Friday, September 21 indicating progress for their children with AR goals so far this quarter. Your child’s AR goal for the quarter can be found on a post-it in the front of his or her planner.
The students on Team Silver will have until the end of the day on Friday, October 12, the last day of first quarter, to take quizzes on the books they have completed to have points toward their AR goals.
I am encouraging the children to read at a good pace and to read carefully to help them have success on their AR quizzes. The children must pass their quizzes in order to receive points toward their goal on the books they read. The point value awarded for the book also goes down with each question missed on the quiz. Please take a moment to discuss your child’s progress so far this quarter with his or her AR goal and to help them continue to map out a plan for working toward achieving their goal by the end of the quarter.
Students on Team Silver are given time in class to read during Reader’s Workshop but are also encouraged to read at home to help them work toward their AR goals. Students in 5th grade will receive a “W” for work in their planners for AR goals not met by the end of the quarter.
In order to help encourage students to meet their AR goals and reading goals I am asking students on Team Silver to read for at least 20 minutes a night at home for homework to help them make progress in their books. I am asking students to read for 20 minutes at home at least 5 nights a week. This is the main homework the students will be focusing on for ELA during the year other than working on writing projects or other projects that might need more time to finish.
Writing
Next week, we will begin exploring the genre of Personal Narratives and will begin planning and drafting our own personal narratives about a “Journey to Our Favorite Place.”
Math
This topic will cover:
- Mental math
- Estimation
- Standard algorithm
Science
- Independent and dependent variables
- Creating a testable question
- Writing a hypothesis
- Designing a fair test
- Conducting an experiment
- Collecting data and showing results
- Drawing conclusions
We have also conducted 2 labs! We tested how arm position effects how many times you can jump, and if the color of the M&M effects how long it takes to dissolve. On Monday we will be testing if the amount of Mentos effects how much Diet Coke leaves the bottle.
Check out our Instagram for pictures of these experiments!
Social Studies
We wrapped up our unit on Map Skills this week by creating our own maps of an Imaginary Island. Our island maps could be in the shape of our favorite activities, foods, sports, animals, or other favorite things.
Our maps needed to include several of the key map features we have been studying in class:
- map title
- legend or map key
- compass rose
- map scale
- locations of cities
- a capital city
- symbols representing key landforms, bodies of water or other landmarks or points of interest on our islands
We will also be having a final test over our Map Skills unit on Monday, September 24. A study guide was sent home with the children to help them review for the test earlier this week. I have encouraged the children to review a little bit of the study guide at home each night this week and have also encouraged them to review it after morning work in the mornings as well this past week.
Our next unit of study will be Regions and Geography of the United States. We will also be reviewing Oceans and Continents as well.
