Klaus's Kernels
Here are some FUN FACTS about the colleges that have visited in the past few weeks:
- University of Tennessee, Knoxville has a stadium right on the water so fans are known for having "Sailgate" parties before the game rather than "Tailgate" parties. Their fight song is Rocky Top sung by Dolly Pardon. They also have a world famous "body farm" (cadavers) used by their Anthropology/Forensic and Criminology/Criminal Justice departments.
- University of Connecticut, which has their own dairy farm and makes their own ice cream, hosts a One Ton Sundae event where students can pay $1 and get a mini bucket of ice cream and toppings. In Spring, they host Oozeball which is the Nations Largest mud volleyball tournament.
- UC Irvine, holds 4 Guinness World Records among which is the Largest Water Balloon fight. Just imagine that!
- UC Davis has an enrollment of 40,031 students and a bike population of 19,650. So if you end up at Davis, you'd better get a bicycle or get left behind.
- UC San Diego has a sculpture called “Fallen Star” which sits atop Jacobs Hall, also known as Engineering Building 1 – cantilevered at an angle from a corner of the seventh floor.

College Spotlight
Johnson and Wales University by Jupiter Polevoi
With two blooming campuses on the east coast (Providence, RI and Charlotte, NC), Johnson and Wales University is a private, 4 year, non-profit institution with a plethora of different majors that cater to students with all sorts of interests and career paths. From culinary arts, Ag studies, and your typical STEM majors, J&W has everything you could possibly want.
While most colleges focus on Gen ED requirements for your first 2 years, J&W jumps right in. Your first year of college focuses completely on your major, diving straight into “learning labs”, which are hands-on experiences that align with your major. For example, I’m interested in pursuing forensic science, so my “learning lab” will have to do with crime scene and DNA analysis. While approaching your sophomore and junior year at J&W, you’ll start to immerse yourself in their internship program, where they’ve partnered with thousands of internship opportunities around the country for 40+ years. These internships typically take place during the summer months, and give you an amazing opportunity to get real life, hands-on experience, which also allows you to see if this is something you really want to pursue. Not to mention that internships look stunning on job applications.
Johnson and Wales’ main campus is in Providence, RI, right next to Brown University and RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). This campus is known for its culinary and agricultural practices, so if you’re in the Westmont Ag program and you plan on pursuing it in the future, definitely consider J&W! It’s an extremely walkable city with major cities like Boston (45 minutes away) and New York (3 hours away) in its proximity.
STATS: GPA avg- 3.1 (if planning on STEM) or 2.7 (no STEM)
Uses common app, but they don’t really look at the essays!
FAFSA eligibility up to $1000 on merit scholarships.
$1000 visit award for all 4 years! If you visit J&W and end up attending, $4000 will go to all four years of your tuition!

Career Spotlight
Animal Care and Service Worker by Maddon Hoh-Choi
Who doesn’t love pets or the zoo? Those who are truly passionate are Animal Care and Service Workers, who attend to or train animals in a variety of settings — such as kennels, zoos, stables, shelters, clinics, and aquariums. As of last year, the U.S. had 343,600 care or service workers. The field is one of America’s fastest growing careers, projected to grow 30% from 2021 to 2023. Last year, the median wage for caretakers was $28,600, and the median annual wage for trainers was $31,280.
Animal care and service workers typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, and most work is learned through an experienced trainer. Pet groomers often learn their trade under the guidance of an experienced groomer. Many employers prefer to hire candidates who have experience working with animals.
The job can be physically or emotionally demanding, and workers risk injury when they care for animals, especially in medical settings. Care and service workers should have a passion for working with furry (or scaly) companions.
Median Pay: $28,600 - $31,280
Typical Entry-level Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Work Experience in Related Occupation: None
On-the-Job Training: Yes, most work is learned through an experienced trainer. Pet groomers often learn their trade under the guidance of an experienced groomer.
Job outlook, 2021-31: 29% (much faster than average)
