Who is Viola?

Big image

Identity

Viola thinks she needs to be a guy to keep herself safe. She will act like a guy, be the Duke's servant and let it all be easy from there on. She has a home, protection, food and everything she needs to survive.

"Conceal me what I am, and be my aid

For such disguise as haply shall become

The form of my intent. I’ll serve this duke.

Thou shall present me as an eunuch to him." (Act I Scene II 50) This quote means she was completely on board with becoming a guy and serving the duke.

Gender

Viola dresses up like a guy. She knows she is a women. But in She's The Man, it is a choice. In Twelfth Night she did it because she had to. "Oh, that I served that lady

And might not be delivered to the world,

Till I had made mine own occasion mellow,

What my estate is." (Act I Scene II 40) This quote means she needs to be anything but a women. She needs a job and somewhere to stay.

Perception

In Twelfth Night Viola is seen as a normal person. A eunuch is seen more feminine but still a full male. She knew how to act like a eunuch. "

I left no ring with her. What means this lady?

Fortune forbid my outside have not charmed her!

She made good view of me, indeed so much

That sure methought her eyes had lost her tongue,

For she did speak in starts distractedly." (Act II Scene II 15) Olivia even fell in love with her.

This quote means Viola realized Olivia fell in love with her, because she thinks she is a guy.

Similarities and Differences

Me and Viola are completely different. The first reason being I can't dress as my opposite gender. Second reason in her time I am a lot more safer then she is, I can do more and I have the ability to get any job I want because I am a guy. My only similarity I have with her is that I have a brother.

Identity

Viola thinks she is strong and has the ability to be in boys soccer. In one of the scenes she asks her friend to dress her up like her brother so she can go to another school. This means she really wants to play soccer and prove girls are as good as boys in it.

Gender

Viola is not forced to be a man. She chose to be one to play soccer on the boys team. But at the end she is forced to show everyone she's a woman. This being because Sabastian came to the school a day early and everything is going wrong within the game.

Perception

They see her as very weird and very rude. Because she talks to women the way she does. A quote being "which one would you wanna see naked more" (She's the Man). Making it look like she cares about something more then what should really be cared for.

Similarities and Differences

We are similar because I have a brother and so does she. We are different because I don't really like soccer and I don't go to a high school with dorms. Me and Viola have nearly nothing in common.
