AVHS Update

Sunday, April 4

Message from the Principal

April is an important month for many of our families. Today marks the celebration of Easter for Christians and the final day of Passover for Jews. On Monday, April 12th, Muslims will begin the holy month of Ramadan and Hindus will celebrate the New Year. I want to extend my warmest wishes to all who observe these important celebrations and recognize the importance of coming together during these times.

I’m continuously thankful for the diversity that truly makes our school community a special place. Yes, diversity can be difficult, but the students, parents, and teachers at AVHS have proven that there is a choice to be made: to allow diversity to be used as a wedge or to embrace the notion that although people work harder in diverse environments, the hard work pays off in better outcomes, deeper understanding, and shared experiences.

The past year has looked very different for everyone in our school community regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, orientation, gender identity/expression, ability, economic status, or other diverse backgrounds. Last year, traditional places of gathering - houses of faith, schools, community and family venues - were silenced. Out of need and solidarity, we have renewed our understanding of what it means to demonstrate persistence, cooperation, flexibility, and faith in others. I’m honored and inspired to be a part of Apple Valley High School and I hope you feel the same. Take care. Be well. Go Eagles!

MCA Testing on Wednesdays in April

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) requires all schools to administer Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments every Spring. Students in Grade 10 take MCA Reading and Science, and students in Grade 11 take MCA Math. MCAs provide information to families regarding student progress towards state standards. They are not required for graduation.

AVHS would like ALL families in grade 10 and 11 to RSVP with their plans for MCA Testing on upcoming Wednesdays. Having an accurate sense of the number of students coming to the building allows us to plan for an appropriate number of testing rooms and testing staff. You can RSVP via the information below; the form only takes a few minutes to complete. If you have a student in Grade 10 or 11, please RSVP TODAY.

MCA testing will start at 9:45 on the following days. Students will need to bring their school iPad and a wired pair of headphones (if they want questions read aloud to them.)

MCA Math (Grade 11): Wednesday, April 7

MCA Reading (Grade 10): Wednesday, April 14

MCA Science (Grade 10): Wednesday, April 28

Spring Credit Recovery Now Open for Registration

It’s Spring Credit Recovery Time! More than 75 students were able to earn credit by demonstrating their learning during the Winter Session in February. In most cases, students only needed to complete one or two units of study instead of starting over at step one. Don't miss the opportunity to complete missed courses now rather than waiting until this summer.

WHEN? April 20, 22, 27, 28, 29 will be in-person sessions available from 1:40-3:30 (stay until 5 pm and complete more work and hop on the activity bus home)

WHERE? AVHS with your credit recovery teacher. We know it is more successful when you have someone there helping, guiding, and motivating.

About District 196 Foundation

District 196 Foundation is dedicated to eliminating barriers to learning across ISD 196. We’re an all-volunteer organization that focuses on ensuring students have consistent access to food, providing books to keep kids reading during the summer months, and restoring used instruments so more students can participate in band. In response to Covid-19, we shifted our priorities to better address rising food insecurity, technology needs, and personal protective equipment for District 196 teachers and staff.

April 5-9 is National Assistant Principals Week

Please join me in honoring Pete Buesgens during National Assistant Principals Week. Mr. Buesgens has served as an AVHS teacher, athletic director, and continues to be on the front lines in helping our teachers, students, and staff succeed each day – especially in times of considerable/constant change! Mr. Buesgens goes out of his way to look out for others. His love for all things Eagle-affiliated is only surpassed by his care for the people that make this school a special place. Thank you for who you are and how you show up for students and staff alike, Mr. Buesgens. AVHS would not be the same without you!

Apple Valley High School is excited to announce that spring sports have started!

Most Athletic practices and tryouts began on March 29, 2021. All spring athletes should make sure that they have had a physical within the last three years before they attempt to register. USDA Approves Additional Nutrition Benefits

Families in our district who qualify for free or reduced-price meals are now eligible for additional emergency nutritional benefits offered from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

If you have already qualified for free or reduced-price meals earlier this school year, you don’t need to do anything because your family will automatically receive these new benefits.

However, if your family income has been affected by the pandemic and you have not completed an Application for Education Benefits (free or reduced-price meal application) for this school year, please complete and submit your application by Feb. 28, 2021.
