Problem-Solving
Decision-Making and Problem-Solving skills are vital for all of us. We need to THINK before we react, decide, or plan. Using what we know about our brains, we know that our amygdala reacts and can sometimes OVERREACT; when are amygdala is engaged our thinking brain/prefrontal cortex is not optimally working in our favor to make sound decision and solve problems. So, our first step is to calm our amygdala. Taking deep breathes, counting slowly, taking a short break from the “problem situation” can assure that our amygdala is calm and our thinking brain/PFC is ready to problem-solve. One of the first steps is to establish if this is a Big Problem or a Small Problem. Big Problems can involve danger, someone being hurt or property being damaged. Big Problems for children will need the assistance of adults. Most problems that children encounter are Small Problems. Small Problems can be solved on your own. When we calm down first, use what know (what is stored in our Hippocampus—what worked last time, what I have seen others do successfully, or what I have been taught is the right thing to do) we can solve many problems on our own. Sometimes we need advice or help with a plan of action; but it is a powerful feeling when children realize the pride and feelings of accomplishment when they are able to make wise decisions and problem-solve successfully.
