Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day - January 18, 2021 - NO SCHOOL

On March 14, 2017, I had the opportunity to visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial in Washington, D.C. with a wonderful group of about forty high school juniors and seniors. I was a high school assistant principal at the time, and I decided to help organize a tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The schools we visited include Wilberforce University (Ohio), Hampton University (Virginia), North Carolina A & T University (North Carolina), Fisk University (Nashville), and Meharry Medical College (Nashville). While we were in Washington D.C., we also visited the Washington Monument and stood in the very spot where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream speech.

This trip was nothing short of inspirational for me, and I can't help but reflect on that experience today, which is Dr. King's birthday. I am remembering one of his famous quotes that continues to resonate with me in my personal and professional life. Dr. King stated, "the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

There is plenty of challenge and controversy to go around these days. It has been and continues to be a very tough school year. However, in times of challenge and controversy, there are opportunities to be compassionate and supportive of one another, even when we disagree. This is the foundation for how we move forward into the future.

Please join me in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by reflecting on his legacy and all that he represents. Thank you, Dr. King!

Revised Plan for Supporting Quarantined Students

Throughout this week, we spent time revising our plan for supporting students who are quarantined. Teachers have the choice to either live stream their instruction for students or record their instruction and post the videos to Canvas each day. We created a document that communicates to parents and students how each of their teachers will provide them instruction to students who are quarantined. Please click on the link below to view that document. Please reach out to teachers, counselors, and/or administrators if you need support. This new plan will start on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, which means that students who are quarantined can start viewing live instruction and/or instructional videos on Canvas on this day.

Mr. Keith Clair

On Tuesday, I emailed parents to let them know that our beloved custodian, Mr. Keith Clair, passed away last weekend. Mr. Clair had been a custodian at Hixson for many years, and he touched the lives of many students and staff. His kindness, friendship, and commitment to Hixson Middle School will be sorely missed.

At this time, the Hixson staff is collecting a love offering in support of Mr. Clair's family. When I sent my email to parents on Tuesday, some of you responded with your condolences and asked how you could help Hixson support his family during this difficult time. If you would like to contribute to the love offering, please do so through one of the methods included below. Our librarian, Gail Tumminello, is in charge of collecting the funds. We will make the donation to Mr. Clair's family on Friday, January 22, 2021.

Picture Retake Day will be January 20, 2021.

  • Students who attend school in person will have their picture retaken, if they choose, during the school day on January 20 between 8:30 am and 10:00 am.

  • If your student will not be at school on January 20 but needs his or her picture retaken, then don't worry! We are working with Wagner to secure a third picture day. I will release that date to parents when it's confirmed.

Construction!

The Hixson administrative team had the opportunity to tour the new additions to our building. It was truly amazing to see the progress that the construction workers have made on this project. We would like to thank them for making our school an awesome place to be! Please view the photos below from our tour!

SIS and Canvas

This is a quick reminder for parents to please remember to check SIS for grades. SIS is our live and final gradebook. If your student moved from virtual to responsive or from responsive to virtual, the Canvas pages might show that the student has missing assignments from semester 1. If that message shows up on your students' Canvas page, it should be disregarded.

Technology Support

Below is a link to the technology support ticket system we are utilizing to provide our learners and families with the most efficient system for submitting technology support requests. Use this site to submit your request when you are having issues with your student's equipment/access/accounts/etc.
