Principal's Message

Hello Members of the KMS Community,

I hope that you all had a great week.

I need to remind everyone that when students are attending virtually, the students' cameras must be turned on. This was shared in the district's re-opening plans. If a student has a documented condition that doesn't allow for his/her camera to be on, please contact the student's school counselor and we will evaluate each request on a case by case basis. We are experiencing too many situations where a student turns off his or her camera and mic and then doesn't answer the teacher's question because they are not in the room. Please remind your student of the importance of being in the moment during instruction. Also, in-person days are extremely important but we are seeing increased excuses from students who want to stay home on their "on days." We have school personnel that can assist families who may be struggling with online and in-person attendance. Please let us know if you would like us to get more involved. We are more than happy to help.

Additionally, parents of hybrid students who will not be reporting to school on their assigned day must call the attendance clerk at 245-2010, ex.2279 to report their student's absence and the reason for the absence. Excused absence reasons are those that are listed in the Student/Parent handbook found on our website.

RI School Support Helpline is Free for Educators, Students, & Families

Highlander Institute recognizes that students, families, and educators have all been impacted in different, unpredictable ways by COVID-19 and school reopening plans. Teachers and families are rising to the challenge, but many of them may have questions or concerns on their minds. Please spread the word that the RI School Support Helpline (formerly the RI Distance Learning Helpline) is continuing this fall to offer support, address needs, and make connections.

We would like to send a major thank you to Rhode Island Foundation for their generous support of this vital service. We are grateful to the RI Department of Education and the Governor's Office for their partnership. Are you interested in submitting a request for support or know someone who needs help? Visit our website or leave a voicemail to describe your issue by calling (401) 232-4725.

Lunch Protocol

Each morning a Google Form is sent to the students in school asking for their choice of a hot lunch or a cold lunch. Only students that are attending school that day need to answer the form. We are trying to reduce waste by getting an accurate number of lunches to be prepared. Please remind your children to compete the form before 9:30 am and at home students do not need to complete the form.
