What is a pencil gram? Students will buy a pencil for their friend or, maybe, themselves. When purchasing a pencil, you can create a personal note for your friend! The pencil grams will be delivered on Valentines Day.

February celebrates Black History Month
Mae C. Jemison
The first African American female astronaut. In 1992, she flew into space aboard the Endeavour, becoming the first African American woman in space.
Mae C. Jemison is an American astronaut and physician who, on June 4, 1987, became the first African American woman to be admitted into NASA’s astronaut training program. On September 12, 1992, Jemison finally flew into space with six other astronauts aboard the Endeavour on mission STS47, becoming the first African American woman in space. In recognition of her accomplishments, Jemison has received several awards and honorary doctorates.
AHA - Kids Heart Challenge is HERE!! Last Week to become a 💕 Hero!
WEEK 3 UPDATE: Fundraiser goes through February 17th.
As of 2/12/23: NC has raised $10,625.44 for AHA!! (2022 NC raised $14,389)
*all $ raised goes directly to AHA

AND... 3 students have earned a "Golden Egg" from the mystery gift package!! This means the student and their class just got entered into a drawing where if they are chosen, they all will be invited to a virtual party with Finn and Kelly!

Dear Families – Kids Heart Challenge has kicked off! Our goal is to have 100% of our families learn Hands-Only CPR by completing Finn’s Mission. Help us save lives and Be the Torch that will light the path of hope in the fight against heart disease and stroke! If you haven’t yet, join our team TODAY!

- SEND 10 emails or texts to family and friends through the Kids Heart Challenge App for Apple or Android
- COMPLETE FINN’S MISSION in your HQ to learn Hands-Only CPR, how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T., and how you can help kids with special hearts! Students who complete Finn’s Mission will earn Finn’s Lifesaver Award!
Special School Incentives: The classroom with the most participation (students registered): gets a free dress day!
- Each student in the winning class for the classroom challenge will earn the XL Frankie bonus gift + Amazon gift card for the teacher!
Every student who completes Finns Mission will get lunch with the principal!

Kids Run the OC Marathon: Training begins February 7th!

The "Running Club" training will begin on February 7th. Training will take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 - 3:15. With many after school activities taking place, students are welcome to attend when they can.

CAASPP and Physical Fitness Testing coming soon!
- The state mandated Physical Fitness Testing for 5th, 7th and 9th grade students will take place February 27 - March 24. The Physical Fitness test includes the following assessments: Push-ups, Sit-ups, Flexibility, trunk lift, mile run. Please speak with your 5th grade teacher for any questions.
CAASPP - The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is the state academic testing program. CAASPP is a system intended to provide information that can be used to monitor student progress and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and career.
- CAASPP incorporates the Smarter Balanced Assessment Conscortium (SBAC), a standardized test consortium
- Students in 3rd - 8th grade, and 11th grade will take part in the SBAC.
- For Nohl Canyon, SBAC will take place May 8 - May 26
**** Please plan vacations and medical appointments around these dates (specifically 8-10 am each day)
- Students will be assessed in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. 5th grade students will also take the California Science Test

1) NO CELL from BELL to BELL - cell phones need to be turned OFF and stored in students backpack from first bell to dismissal bell.
2) Students who need to contact parents/guardians are expected to come to the front office to make the phone call.
3) Students who do not follow the guidelines:
1st occurrence: warning - expected to place phone back in backpack
2nd occurrence: cell phone confiscated - Parent Pick-up in office

OUSD is hiring for Substitute Teachers!
Immediate Substitute Teacher Positions Available
We are looking for certificated substitute teachers to help our elementary and secondary schools. If you have a bachelor’s degree, we can help you through the process to become a substitute and support your local school. We currently have substitute positions available immediately and the current pay is $160.10 for the full-day (tier 1) and can go up to $195.33 for the full day (tier 2). This is a great position for any person with a bachelor’s degree looking to help our schools while earning extra income. Orange Unified will also be holding informational meetings on how to become an OUSD substitute teacher from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 15th and November 29th in the Panther Lab located at the District Office near the softball fields in the back parking lot (1401 N.
