McClellan Elementary School Newsletter
Hello McClellan family,
I know this past week was stressful for many families. Please know we are standing with you and I am committed to full transparency surrounding the lead abatement issue. I will continue to keep you updated as I receive information.
Please see the information below from the Office of Student Health and Wellness regarding blood testing. If you have additional questions, please let me know.
We are expecting a full house for the holiday assembly and will start on time (8:00am)
I hope your weekend was peaceful and full of joy.
Kindly,
Dr. Cole
Lead testing update
Please see the email below from the Director of the office of student health and wellness regarding testing. Please reach out if you have questions.
If there’s suspicion that a child may have been exposed to lead, parents should talk to their child’s healthcare provider about getting a blood lead test.
Many insurance policies cover the cost of testing for lead in the blood. The cost of blood lead testing for children enrolled in Medicaid is covered.
As an immediate resource for those parents who wish for their child to receive a blood test for lead, our nearest School Based Health Center that is open for community patients is located at Drake Elementary School. There is a community door off of W 27th Street directly to the clinic. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, this location can also see patients who are uninsured or have no means to pay for healthcare.

- Parents who do not have health insurance for their child may contact us at 773-553-5437 and we can assist with a Medicaid application.
- The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH)’s lead hotline can address any health related questions. For questions or more information, parents should call 312-747-5323.
- Children with a confirmed elevated blood level of at least 5 micro/deciliter are referred to the case management unit. A Chicago Dept. of Public Health Nurse will meet with the family to conduct a social developmental assessment, provide nutritional counseling, coordinate with the lead inspector, and refer the child for additional services as needed.
- Additional information about lead and children can be found at www.cdc.gov/lead.
The health effects of exposure are more harmful to children less than six years of age because their bodies are still developing and growing rapidly. Young children also tend to put their hands or other objects, which may be contaminated with lead dust, into their mouths, so they are more likely to be exposed to lead than older children.
I have contacted the Chicago Dept. of Public Health's Lead Poisoning Prevention Hotline: (312) 747 LEAD (747-5323) and am waiting on a response to see if there are any additional resources available.

Attendance!
Weekly Homeroom challenge!
Homeroom 204 won for our K-2 grade band, Homeroom 203 won for our 3rd-5th grade band and 6th grade's room 101 took home the Bella for our 6th -8th grade band again!
We are still below 90% and performance is definitely showing. Please, if your child is not sick, bring them to school. Too many of our students are missing consecutive days of school.
Out of Uniform Mondays are awarded to students who attended school the previous week all 5 days and have no tardies (after 7:45am).
Also, going forward, students who are not in school the day before a field trip with an unexcused absence will not be allowed to go. Field trips are an important part of field experiences for our students in learning, However, if they are not here to learn the meaning behind the reason for the field trip, it does not make sense for them to go.
Please help us by getting your student to school each day by 7:30am! We'll do the rest!
