Principal's Message for February 4, 2016
(If you are having difficulty opening links on this E-blast, please click on the message, “Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser,” which is located at the top of this Eblast.)
Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
On behalf of JMS and all of RSD6, I am proud to share that our Numeracy Specialist, Mrs. Robin Moore, has been personally invited by the Connecticut Commissioner of Education, Dr. Dianna R. Wentzell to join the Commissioners Council on Mathematics. Reflective of her vast knowledge and informed perspective of the teaching and learning of mathematics, this honor will allow Mrs. Moore to work with other leaders in mathematics education from across the state as they work with the Commissioner to "develop recommendations for concrete steps that will improve the quality of math instruction our students receive and to ensure they learn the mathematical skills and knowledge necessary for success in life after high school."
Kindergarten Registration
Regional School District No. 6 is currently conducting kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year. Children must be 5 years of age on or before December 31st of this year to be eligible for kindergarten enrollment this fall. Please call our main office at 860-567-7420 to request a registration packet. (See notice below)
School Safety and Security
Last Friday, a letter from me to parents and guardians regarding JMS's safety and security policies and procedures was sent home. A digital copy of the letter is available here. I strongly encourage all parents and guardians to read this letter and to contact me with any questions.
Additional Safety and Security Updates
- P.M. Pre-K: Parents and guardians are asked to please refrain from arriving prior to 12:45 for P.M. pre-K drop-off, as staff are unavailable to supervise students until that time.
- Entering the Building: All visitors to JMS must enter through the main/front entrance. This includes situations in which a child is being picked up at dismissal time at the rear of the building. Individuals picking up students who wish to access the building will be asked to use the front entrance. This precaution is in place to promote both individuals' safety and building security.
Cold-Weather Clothing
Please note the following, originally posted in our Student/Parent Handbook, regarding cold weather clothing: We try to hold recess outdoors whenever possible. Students should wear appropriate clothing such as warm jackets or coats, hats, mittens/gloves and boots during cold and inclement weather. Students without boots must stay on the blacktop area as long as snow covers the playground.
L.I.F.E. Nights
L.I.F.E nights are a great opportunity for our Region 6 families to come together across the district to meet and enjoy a story with new friends. Students and their families in preschool through grade 2 are welcome to attend any or all of the events across the district. We hope to you see you there! The dates are listed in the flyer below.
Minds in Motion
Region 12 will host their first Minds in Motion event on Saturday, February 27th. There will be fast-paced, hands-on workshops for students in grades K-8 and informative workshops for parents and educators. Adults can attend, free of charge. Click here for more information, and click here to register.
PTO News
The JMS PTO has arranged a fun afternoon out for parents and guardians at The Arts Desire in Torrington from 3:00PM to 5:00PM on Sunday, March 6th. This adult-only event can not only serve to strengthen the JMS parent community, but will also be an enjoyable fundraiser for future PTO-sponsored activities, such as ArtsAlive, assemblies, guest artists, and technology for the classroom. Space is limited; please click here for details and to register. Additionally, the PTO is running a Lovable Labels fundraiser; details can be found on the flyer below.
Parks and Recreation Update
Please note that the Morris Park and Recreation "Swim and Gym" offering for February 6th has been canceled. Information on a new date will be provided by the Parks and Recreation department.
