THE FINAL FOUR (DAYS OF SCHOOL)
OLYMPIC DAY
Alta Vista's Annual Olympic Day is tomorrow! Information, including a map, has been placed in your mailbox. Please review the paperwork for details about your starting point. I've also attached electronic copies at the bottom of the newsletter. Before students leave today, please remind them to bring a labeled water bottle, hats, and sunglasses tomorrow. Sunscreen with breakfast is also a good idea. Have fun!
MOVING REQUESTS
We have some teachers moving classrooms so that we can better place our SPED classes and our third grade team. We are awaiting more boxes, but the DO is short on supplies. If you have any extra boxes that you could loan us, please bring them by the office. Also, if you have some extra time, think about stopping in to give Karla, Michelle, Lynne, Kari, Vince, or Liz a little extra help. Thanks!
RECESS 101
There will be no Recess 101 PE classes on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.
SUMMER SCHOOL @ ALTA VISTA
If you still have lingering questions about summer school, be sure to check out the Q&A document in Google Drive. We have also added a table at the end of the document for teachers to add a picture of their classroom arrangement. So, please take a quick pic and add it to the table. This will help the summer school staff to rearrange the furniture at the end of the session.
END OF YEAR CHECK OUT
At the bottom of this newsletter, you will see the link to the End of Year Check Out form. I've also place the sign-up sheets for checking out by my door, sign up for a time to have Cathy or Vicki check you out for the year.LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
Although we do not have a lunch break/recess on the last day of school, at 10:00 Vicki will call for any students who want/need to purchase a lunch.
BUGS
Schools across the District are seeing an increase in cockroach activity. In response, Mary Ann shared the following information:
Our pest control vendor has confirmed that this is due to the sudden change in weather with our general geographic location. We are submitting each report of increased activity to be addressed by our vendor. In addition, we're required to follow the Healthy Schools Act by using the least toxic control methods first while students are present. The monitoring stations (small sticky traps) are an important tool for the technicians to help identify the locations and activity levels for treatment. The custodians can replace the stations when full, but they should be labeled with the date and location they were pulled from and saved for the technician to review when he arrives. They can be placed in a bag or box and stored somewhere out of sight. We have supplied the sites with additional monitoring stations for this purpose. If you need an additional supply, please let us know.
Please see the attached "best management practices" information sheet, as well as the treatment plan provided by our vendor below:
Our plan is to use this month's services to conduct an audit of your sites detailing areas in need of cockroach exclusion (sealing drains with screen where Ricky has found activity and installing door sweeps to close gaps preventing entry into classrooms and offices) and make recommendations for further exterior treatment. See attached brochure from DPR's School IPM Program on BMPs for outdoor cockroaches.
If further treatment is needed he will use a combination of baits and spray spot treatment with a reduced risk-product first and then if we see the problem still persists we will use products that require posting. Since school is out soon we would want to do the treatment with the higher risk products on a day when students and staff are not present.
I hope this information is helpful to ease the concerns, but please don't hesitate to keep reporting the activity as needed. Cockroaches are extremely resilient and require consistent treatment, however keep in mind that the type we are seeing will not survive indoors without water.
