The Gardener and the Flower (April 20)
Some time ago I was sitting in bed watching the show, A Million Little Things. During the episode I heard this phrase...
In every relationship, there is a flower and a gardener.
Strong relationships often are fluid. You shouldn't always be the gardener, nor should you always be the flower. An interchange should occur.
What Does This Mean For Us?
One of the most normal feelings is to allow negative thoughts to creep in when we feel overwhelmed or we deal with a "full plate". When you begin to feel stretched. I encourage you to prioritize.
How are you? You've heard it before, if you don't take care of yourself how can you help others? Take time for you each day.
Family first. Many of you are parents, spouses, and someone's son or daughter. You should be putting your family at the top of the list.
Connect with Kids. It's important to note, the key word is CONNECT not teach. As an educator (and human being) the key is connecting. Checking on people you care for and making sure they are doing okay. You would do the same thing face-to-face. If a student appeared downtrodden or stressed you would prioritize their wellbeing first. We are no longer in the classroom, but it shouldn't change the fact that the connection is the most important.
Give Back. For many helping others, volunteering or finding a way to support a cause can add value and give purpose. Recently a family at Warner used their own funds to supply soap for all families that pick up lunches. It's these projects that lift others and in turn, lift yourself.
Finally, you are all helping others day in and day out. I would presume you are all acting as the Gardener. I'm here to say, be vulnerable and ask for support. Sometimes YOU need to be the flower.
