Notes from the Nurse
- Old injuries are to be treated at home or a health care facility other than school. The nurse will not get involved with an injury issue already seen by a health care provider unless a specific treatment plan is provided by the health care provider. If re-injury occurs while at school, it would then be appropriately addressed.
- All medication administered at school require proper written consent from a health care provider for prescription medication and/or parental consent for non prescription or over the counter medication.
- The nurse cannot clear a student to return to normal physical activities if a health care provider has placed restrictions on them. This clearance must come from the provider.
- Please ensure that correct phones numbers are provided for parents/guardians and local contact persons.
- Please inform the nurse or teacher if your child has been diagnosed with the flu or any other contagious medical condition that we need to be aware of. Please allow your child time to recover from an illness and is fever free before sending back to school.
- Please make checking your child’s hair/scalp routine practice, especially if he or she is complaining of an itchy scalp. If head lice is found, treat as soon as possible to get rid of them because the longer you wait, the worse and more difficult the problem becomes. If head lice is found, check the heads of all family members and treat at same time if possible. Head lice are small bugs, no bigger than a sesame seed. They are often found behind the ears or at the nape of the neck. Head lice eggs are called nits. They are grey-white in color, about the size of a knot of thread and they will be firmly attached to the hair. If head lice is found, please be sensitive to your child’s feelings. Lack of cleanliness does not cause head lice.
Please contact Nurse Boulware at (803) 476-4009 with any questions or concerns about the above.
Second Step
As we begin the 2019 year, we all want to make positive changes for ourselves and our family. Take a look at an activity you can do at home that is from our Second Step program.
What Is My Child Learning?
Your child is learning the rules for how to be a good listener. These rules help your child know
how to listen and act in a group so everyone can learn.
Why Is This Important?
Being good listeners helps children be better learners. Following the Listening Rules helps
children listen and pay attention in class.
Ask your child:
What are the Listening Rules in your class? (Have your child tell you each rule and show you
the action that goes with it.
Rules are listed below:
- Eyes watching (Point to the corners of your eyes)
- Ears listening (Cup your ears with your hands)
- Voice quiet (Put your finger to your lips)
- Body still (Hug your torso with both arms)
Practice at Home
Before giving directions for daily activities, such as picking up toys or washing hands, remind your child to use the Listening Rules.
For example: You need to use your “Listening Rules” now. Say each rule and do the actions along with your child, then give the directions: We’re getting ready to leave now, so put on your shoes and coat.
