Education Week

Next week is Education Week and we have a lot planned to celebrate all of the learning that takes place here at Banksmeadow.

On Tuesday 29 July, the students will be participating in cartooning workshops with cartoonist extraordinaire Robert Patruno. We know that the students will love learning the art of cartooning and we thank Robert for donating his time.

Also on Tuesday 29 July, the Students in Years 3 to 6 will be participating in their final Zen Martial Arts lesson for the year. Coach Tim will be bringing along his armour and the students will be given the opportunity to put their learning to the test in sparring. Parents are welcome to watch these lessons in the school hall. Class times are:

  • 9:00-9:40 3/4M
  • 9:40-10:20 3F
  • 10:20-11:00 6H
  • 11:50-12:30 5M
  • 12:30-1:10 4M

On Wednesday 30 July, you are invited to a special Education Week assembly. It will be held from 11:50-12:30 in the school hall.

On Thursday 31 July, all classes will be participating in a Science fun day. Parents and carers are invited to come and join in on the fun between 9:15 and 11:00am.

Dream Banksmeadow

Throughout Term 3, the staff at Banksmeadow will be running an inquiry that will inform the school plan for 2015-2017 and help us to set goals for the future. We are looking for a small group of future-minded parents to help plan the inquiry, interview other parents, collate and analyse the data. Students will also be given the opportunity to take part in this process.

If you are interested in being involved, please contact Mr Heinecke or send him an email, benjamin.heinecke@det.nsw.edu.au

Both the Junior and Senior dance groups put on a show stopping performance on Tuesday night at Souths Juniors Rugby League Club. All of the hard work that the students have put into rehearsing their routines really paid off as their performances were outstanding.

Special thanks go to Mrs Bragg for all of her efforts coordinating both dance groups and the concert, Ms Vicki for her expert dance instruction and to Mrs Grant for her assistance in the choreography of the senior dance routine. Thank you also to the team of teachers and parents who lent their support in preparing costumes and makeup, working backstage and in the audience to make the night a success.

Southpoint Community Rewards

ACTIVOOSH has registered with Southpoint Shopping Centre for their Community Rewards Program. Any time you make a purchase at Southpoint, you simply need to place your receipts in the barrel labelled Banksmeadow ACTIVOOSH. The whole school community gains if we win any amount of money so we are encouraging all students, parents, families and friends to support us.

The promotion is open now and it closes on 23 September.

Friendly Schools Plus Project

Our school has been selected to work as partners with Macquarie University's Centre for Emotional Health on a project called Preventing Anxiety and Victimisation through education (PAVe). For our part in the project, we will be participating in an evaluation of an intervention designed to enhance students' social and emotional learning and to foster the prevention of bullying behaviours. The intervention is called Friendly Schools Plus.

Students in Years 3 and 4 are being invited to participate by completing a confidential survey on four occasions over the next three years. Teachers will be trained in the Friendly Schools Plus program and it will be taught to the students.

This week we have sent home a parent and student information letter and consent form with all students in Years 3 and 4. Parents in these grades are asked to discuss this project with their child and either return the consent form online (through the link below) or to their child's class teacher before Friday 8 August.

For more information on the project, you can read an article from the Daily Telegraph below or follow the link to the Centre for Emotional Health's website.

Band News

Now that the Junior band has joined the Senior band, we are looking forward to some great sounds coming from everyone. There are two new pieces of music that the students are working on, Rock it and Bluesin. Both pieces, along with The Spook will be performed at the Big Band Bash at Daceyville PS at the end of this term.

All band members should practise Rock it this week as they have already started The Spook late last term.

Finally, a reminder that band rehearsal is now on Tuesday mornings at 8:00am.

Come and Try Guides

This week in assembly Felina and Martine from Girl Guides came to tell us about the new Unit opening in Botany. Girls aged 6-9 years are invited to a come and try guides evening on Tuesday 29 July.
