News from the 7th and 8th grade
English 7
Seventh graders just finished learning about Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes and how important they are to English and to expanding their vocabulary. Students completed a Google slide project and presented them to the class. We are now beginning the novel, Daniel’s Story, a historical fiction story about a young boy and his family struggling to survive the horrors of WWII and the Holocaust. We are learning about the history of the war and the Holocaust in preparation for reading the novel.
21st Century
Students just finished up a unit on Greek and Latin words in which they learned how many of the words in English come from these origins and how understanding them is key to expanding their vocabulary. As part of the project they made Google slide presentations for the class and shared their knowledge of new words. Our next essay will be on a topic of their choice that relates to WWII. This connects to the novel they are reading , Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel about his experience with his father during WWII and living in concentration camps. Students will be conducting research on their topic before beginning to compose their essay. As part of the project they are learning more about the history and background of the war to gain a better understanding of the topic. The culmination of the project will be their essay and a visual presentation to the class on what they learned from their research.
Science
SC Science Department Receives Grant - On Friday, Feb 23rd South Central Superintendent Ben Chaffee, JH Principal Alicia Mckee, and JH teachers Matt Seasly (5th), and Bryan Oney (7th and 8th) attended a Fisher-Titus luncheon to receive a $3,000 Science/Health/Technology grant. 7th & 8th grade Multimedia students have learned to use some of the tools in Adobe Photoshop this semester. Students have used some of these edited photos in their Winter Games 2018 Google Slideshow, which showcased photos, images and videos of the Olympic events. iMovie has been explored this semester as students learned to edit photos as well as live footage adding music and text to complete their iMovie projects. Mrs. Oney’s 7th & 8th grade tech teams have been busy uploading homework assignments to the South Central Middle School homework page located at http://southcentraltrojans.weebly.com.
