Te Karere a te Tumuaki - Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou. We have very much enjoyed having your children back at school this week. The weather has been lovely and warm, the kids have been out and about playing and we have had a really focussed week of learning.
Our thoughts have been with whānau from Kahutara and Greytown Schools after the passing of a much loved and respected partner, parent & colleague. At times like these we are also reminded of how precious our time is with family, and how irreplaceable we are at home. There will always be someone to step into our work shoes, but at home for our children, partners, family members and loved ones there is no replacement. We are reminded to keep things in perspective and prioritise time with family & friends. Do what we can with the time we have at work but let's not let it consume us at the expense of our families and our health.
Kia pai tō mutunga wiki,
Belinda Bunny
Welcome
At the start of this week we welcomed Patrick Hanson and Harry James. Both boys have settled in well and it is nice to have them in Kourarau Syndicate.
Gladstone School Open Day - Tuesday 11th May
We warmly invite any and all of you to come and see our school in 'operating' mode. Pop by any time to see our classes in action, wander through the spaces and soak up the focussed hum of the syndicates. Our Year 7&8's will be on-hand to take you on a tour through the school and I (Mrs Bunny) will be available to chat. You are welcome any time. Lunch is from 12:30 - 1:20 and cross country skills starts at 2:15 if you'd like to see our Year 8 leaders in action with their groups.
Assembly
Thanks to Logan Mason and William Orsborn who ran a super assembly this week. Congratulations to Tara Tucker who was our star of the week - she led her cross country skills group by herself and had superb confidence and control of all the groups. Her activity was also very well planned. I enjoyed spending time at first break over a yummy morning tea with Lucy McKay; Enzo Fuller; Micky Quirke; Zoe Cates; David McKay; Annie Heffernan; Guy Reynolds; James Strang & Harry James who earned kaitiakitanga certificates this week - well done.
Year 8 Leadership - Cross Country Skills Training
Thanks so much to our Year 8's for setting up and running brilliant cross country skills sessions for the school. Students split into whānau groups to participate in 8 different sessions led by the Year 8's. It is a wonderful example of the leadership opportunities our students capably run with and there were many positive comments from both staff and students. These sessions take place each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Our cluster cross country is taking place on Tuesday 1st of June here at Gladstone School.
Proudly Sponsored by
Mrs Black, the Green Team & Embankment Project
Congratulations to the green team who have installed their vege pod this week and have also secured grant funding for their orchard project. Huge thanks to all of you who supported the green team raffle for the vege pod, to the Herrick & Douglas families for supporting the team, to Mrs Black for all the time she is putting in at school and to Mark Edwards for applying to Countdown for the orchard grant. There were 500 applications from all around the country and we were one of the few selected by the panel.
Whāea Micaela has been successful in an application for additional native plants for the embankment area - Great work everyone!
Planting/Gardening Working Bee - Save the Date: Sunday 4th July, 9am.
We have a number of projects on the go at the moment and desperately need some adult input to help move them along. On Sunday the 4th of July we are having a planting, gardening and track-building working bee here at school. We are hoping to have enough help to do the following things:
- Plant more natives & weed eat in the embankment.
- Plant fruit trees in the orchard, lime some of the pathways and take down some fencing.
- Plant an area of the mountain bike track.
- If we can stretch to it, make a section of the junior bike track up on top field.
In the next couple of weeks we will send out a sign-up sheet for helpers and what you will be able to bring along to assist ie. wheelbarrows, small diggers etc...
FoGS are going to provide lunch for everyone that comes down - thank you FoGS for this.
Walnuts
We have collected a wheelbarrow load of walnuts from a beautiful big tree in the soon to be resurrected orchard area.
Fence
And just like that, the fence is gone. These boys have used their break times to be busy in the garden.
Lime
The orchard limed pathways are coming along nicely.
Milo, Donut & Soup Friday
Our first winter focussed Friday kai went well. It was fantastic to have Liz Mason here helping us to get things up and running. Onoke students made a beautiful chicken noodle soup, decorated the donuts and whipped up some lovely warm milo.
Thanks to those of you who ordered online to give us an idea of quantities. Next week we will go back to ordering on the day outside the office by the deck. $1 for milo; $1 for soup; $2 for a donut. The soup flavour will be chicken noodle again next week - sorry no 'Rodney Noodle Soup' as some have suggested!
