CHASING THE HORIZON: PARENTING IS HARD!
a note for parents from Mrs. Yearwood
"If we can just get through this season of parenting, everything from here on out will be easier."
Although it seems that it should be a given to know that parents work hard and worry over their children, I don't think anything can quite prepare us for what the journey is really like. In fact, even the most experienced parent would likely say that the process of parenting is difficult to describe. It's filled with ups and downs, highs and lows, and all the in-betweens.
Sometimes I laugh when I think about how naive we were as young, first time parents. We didn't have a clue what was ahead!
During the parenting journey there are certainly some tough seasons that we all encounter. When our children hurt, we hurt. In our hurt, our first instinct is often to fix the situation for them, or to ask God to fix the situation.
Many years ago I found myself in this type of season. As I cried out to God for help, I learned a few things.
- I learned that I was trusting more in my own parenting skills than in God and His plan for my children.
- I learned that I needed to actually give my worry over to God instead of continuing to hold on to it after I prayed.
- I learned that, like Hannah who prayed for Samuel, I needed to give my children to God.
- I learned that if I truly believed that God wants to use my children for His glory, I have to understand that this means He will mold them and shape them (sometimes bend them, and break them) into what He desires. This refining process can be painful!
- I learned that my worrying was like chasing the horizon. My feeling the need to get past this stage for everything to be okay was really just a fantasy. I will always be concerned over my children. The difference is that my concern, or worry, is not a burden I have to bare when I truly trust in God's plan for them.
Parenting is a tough gig! The good news is that we don't have to do it alone. God is always with us!
For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord. -1 Samuel 1:27-28

COLLEGE EXPLORATION & SCHOLARSHIP SEASON
Primarily during the fall of the Senior Year, students planning to attend college begin working on college admission and scholarship applications. The CCS Guidance Office can help with this process. Stay up to date with college opportunities by visiting the CCS Guidance & Counseling website often.
For younger students, it's never too early to start exploring college ideas! Thanks to the internet, college exploration has never been easier. Students can learn all about prospective colleges by visiting their websites.
Taking advantage of college preview day events is another example of a way families can explore college options. CCS upper school students can learn more about these opportunities through the CCS Guidance & Counseling website and in their grade level Google Classroom with Mrs. Yearwood.
