The Mustang Minute
Week of March 7th
FROM THE PRINCIPALS' OFFICES
It was another awesome week at both BES and BMS! First off, we'd like to thank our Brookwood Families who participated in Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday. We are so fortunate to have such strong home/school relationships. This partnership is such a benefit to our students, and we are looking forward to continuing to work together in support of our kids.
Thank you also to all who attended our Scholastic Book Fair this past week! It was wonderful to see our students perusing the shelves and getting excited about reading. Special thanks to Mrs. Xiong and Mrs. Hackbarth for their hard work in getting this up and running for our students and families.
Our final thank you goes out to our amazing community members who attended our Referendum Luncheon on Friday. We hope you will all consider supporting our schools by making time to vote on April 5th!
Have a wonderful weekend, Mustangs!

From the Classroom...
What's Happening in Mrs. Fitzsimmons' Class?
In guidance class, students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade just concluded a unit on acceptance. Students were very involved in the unit through stories, video clips and hands-on activities which led to great discussions. In kindergarten, students learned what acceptance means and were involved in looking for similarities and differences. They brainstormed all the ways that friends could be similar and different from one another. In first grade, students learned about all the different pieces to their identity - all the different things that make them unique. One of their favorite things was sharing with one another how they got their names and hearing about the different ways families celebrate holidays. In second grade, students learned about diversity and how differences make our world beautiful. Students loved working with comparing and contrasting eggs and then finding that the inside of each egg, no matter the color, size or shape was the same. In third grade, students continued to learn about diversity and were introduced to stereotypes. Students concluded the unit by learning about differences in ability and disability. Students learned how to write their name in braille, how to be a good friend to someone with autism, some signs in sign language, and saw what a game of wheelchair basketball looked like.
What's Happening in Mr. Granahan's Tech Classes?
In Advanced Robotics class, students build and program robots to complete various tasks. RIght now, the challenge is to build and program a robot that can pull the greatest amount of weight. Pictured below, one group is having their robot compete in the weight pull challenge. Also pictured below are other robotics pictures in which students are testing their robot's programming to see if it can correctly complete the task assigned to the specific map.
In Arduino Circuits and Programming class, students build electrical circuits using the correct value resistors and other electrical components. Once the circuit is built, students then write the program software for the Arduino microprocessor to interact with their circuit. Ben's circuit has a button that when pressed the program changes what LED's light up. Meric's circuit is built with a temperature sensor. As the measured temperature increases the program he wrote will light up a sequence of LED's depending on the measured temperature.
How cool is THAT?

On Self-Mangement
Self-Management is a solid skill that children need to succeed. Self-management allows your child to develop their ability to control their behavior and mood, which can be empowering.
The characteristics of self management, which will be displayed in different ways depending on their age and experiences, include:
- Manage and control emotions, thoughts, and behavior in different situations
- Understand why they feel the way they do
- Use appropriate strategies for impulse control and regulating emotions
- Motivating themselves to persevere in overcoming challenges
- Understand that failure or mistakes are a chance to learn and improve
- Set goals, both personal and academic, and work towards them
- Assess where they are at and create new targets
- Develop organizational skills and stick to routines
There are many great reasons for working on self-management skills and strategies.
- Improved confidence & motivation
- Increased self-efficacy when setting and achieving goals
- Improved academic performance
- Improved study skills
- Having pride and confidence in achievements
- Improved self-esteem and self-worth
- Understanding that meeting goals and challenges is not always easy
Want to have a conversation with your child about self-management and self-control?
Use one of these books to read with your child:
When Sophie Gets Angry - Really, Really, Angry
Conversation starters:
- What makes it difficult for you (or others) to self-manage?
- Why do you think [character] struggled to control their emotions?
- What could [character] do to manage their emotions/behavior?
- Do you think it was appropriate for [character] to get angry? What would have been a better strategy?
- Why do you think [character] got so angry/jealous/upset?
- What would be a good strategy to help [character] deal with their emotions?
- What could [character] learn from their mistakes?
