Nelson Mandela was awarded the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for his work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.

Nelson Mandela was the South African President May 10, 1994 - June 14, 1999. He was the first black man to serve as the president.
Prison Life
He spent many of his years in jail while still fighting for a democratic and free society. Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, 18 of those on Robben Island, a rock quarry off the coast of Cape Town.
