What Does a Positive Wastewater or Surface Sample Mean?
A positive surface or wastewater swab might indicate that an individual may be shedding the virus on campus. This means that we should take a closer look by doing nasal swab testing.
What Are the Next Steps?
If you would like your child to join the SASEA project, you can consent here: https://redcap.link/saseaconsenteng. The more students and staff who join the study, the more accurate our efforts become to keep our school safe from the virus.
Students whose parents have submitted their consent will have the opportunity to test on Tuesday, January 18th and Monday January 24th.
English Language Learners
Designated English Language Development time is not the only support your English Learner is receiving. In addition to having daily protected time of 30-45mins, their teachers are also integrating language supports during their instruction throughout the day. Integrated English language instruction is essential for your English Learner to be able to express their understanding of the content being taught to them. Together Designated and Integrated English Language instruction are strong support strategies that will help your student succeed with their Language acquisition.
We will have four ELAC meetings for the 2021-22 school year. Please volunteer and/or join our meetings. Your voice matters! Our next meeting will be on January 18th at 4pm over Zoom.
-Ms. Walker's Reading Tips-
This week: Games to both entertain AND help your student’s reading skills. Even pre-readers can participate!
Before a student can learn to read, they need to be able to hear the sounds in words. When we read, we are matching the sounds of language to the written forms of language.
To try: Say a letter sound, such as /p/ as in pizza. Ask your student to name as many foods as they can that have the /p/ sound at the beginning, such as pancake, pumpkin pie, peach, pear, pineapple, or popcorn.
Now say another beginning letter sound such as the /b/ at the beginning of bear. Ask your student to name as many other animals that start with the /b/ sound, such as bunny, bird, bat or bobcat.
You can use this same strategy in the car. Simply say, “I spy something that begins with the letter sound /w/.” Listen as your student guesses, “Walmart, windows, white car, woman.”
At home, have your student find letters and words on food containers. For example, say, “I spy the letter that makes the /l/ sound, can you find that letter?” Or, “I spy the word ‘chocolate,’ can you point to the word ‘chocolate’?”
Remember, a student’s oral language – in any language – builds a foundation for the reading and writing that occur in school.
