COMMUNITY READING DAY

Tuesday, November 3rd began with Community Readers at Royalston Community School. This year's book theme was food. A variety of books were read, with several books on display written by Royalston resident Nora Dooley including; Everybody Bakes Bread, Everybody Cooks Rice, and Everybody Serves Soup. RCS students enjoyed welcoming back three retired teachers, Mary Carnie who read to grade one students, Janice Lefebvre read to grade three, and Joann Deacon read to students in grade 4. Students were excited to see many familiar faces from the community as well. Photographer and community advocate, Mary Barclay read to students in kindergarten and the Future's program. Kathy Morris, Director of the Royalston Library, read to students in grade six. Rebecca Krause-Hardie, Royalston Tax Collector, was the reader for grade 5. Library Technician and community member, Barbara Richardson, reading in grade two. Readers brought in samples of different foods for students to try and came prepared with fun activities related to food, making it all the more interesting for their young audiences. Thank you to our enthusiastic readers for your time and support.

HALLOWEEN DANCE

The gym was packed during our recent Halloween Party! There were costumes, singing, dancing, games, a photo booth and bake sale. It was wonderful to see so many parents, siblings, past RCS students and community members join in on the fun! Thank you to our PTG and volunteers who helped to make our Halloween dance a huge success.

SCARECROWS & PUMPKINS

Our PTG has done it again! They have planned and organized another fun-filled afterschool event. Many students and families worked hard to build scarecrows and decorate pumpkins. There are scarecrows decorating the common in Royalston and the entrance of our school.

KINDERGARTEN - 6TH GRADE BUDDIES

Mr. Snell and Mrs. Willhite provide time each week for the kindergarten students and sixth graders to collaborate on projects together. Students from both classes look forward to seeing their "buddies," fostering a relationship across grade-levels and having fun learning together. Last week the classes teamed up to decorate pumpkins and enjoy books outside in the sunshine.

BULLYING PREVENTION MONTH

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Mrs. Schwab, Guidance Counselor, has been teaching Classroom Guidance lessons to all classes at Royalston Community School during the month of October. She put a chart poster up in 3rd - 6th grade classes with the Massachusetts Bullying Prevention Law on it. She explained to classes what kinds of behaviors are kind, and which behaviors are hurtful and not allowed at school. Mrs. Schwab read the book Spaghetti In A Hot Dog Bun, by Maria Dismondy, to Mrs. Heogen's 2nd Grade class, which teaches children to respect each other's differences. The main character in the book, Lucy, learns to do a "good tell" to her grandfather when a boy named Ralph teases her about what she eats for lunch, and about her beautiful red, curly hair. Then Lucy reaches out to help Ralph when he gets stuck on the monkey bars. Lucy learns that it's important to stand up for yourself and get adult help in school, and at home, if a student is teasing you. The 2nd grade students used the Turn and Talk strategy to talk about the book, and brainstormed kind and not kind behaviors. Parents and Guardians can contact Mrs. Schwab at RCS on Tuesdays and Thursdays at (978) 249-2900, or by email at rschwab@arrsd.org

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent-Teacher Conferences are being scheduled on Monday, November 9 and Tuesday, November 10. All parents are highly encouraged to attend and participate in conferences. Your knowledge and input about your child are greatly valued and appreciated.

During your parent-teacher conference, your child’s teacher will review performance data and progress in social, emotional and academic areas. This is also an opportunity for you to share, ask questions and express concerns. You will receive your child’s report card at this time. Our teachers look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress.

Please contact Mrs. Lajoie to schedule a conference by stopping by the front office or calling RCS at 978-249-2900. If you are unable to attend a conference here at school, please call to schedule a time for a telephone conference with your child’s teacher.
