Newsletter Week 7 Term 1
St Brigid's School 15 March 2022
Linda's Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Our wonderfully diverse community enriches our school in many ways, bringing experiences of culture, tradition, language, celebrations etc that grow our school. It also brings the different and unique forms of educational experiences that parents have had in their countries of birth. Education systems around the world vary greatly and Aoteroa/New Zealand has developed a world class education system over the last 150 years. But it is different from what many of our parents know from their own personal experiences.
One of the concepts that is new for some parents is composite classes; and this is something a few parents have asked me about.
Composite classes, in our case, Year 3/4, Year 5/6 and Year 7/8, align with the New Zealand Curriculum. The curriculum has been developed in ‘bands’ to cover two years of learning for children.
Level 1 - Years 1 and 2
Level 2 - Years 3 and 4
Level 3 - Years 5 and 6
Level 4 - Years 7 and 8
This allows for children to work through the two year curriculum with teaching targeted at where they need it to be. Most children start at the beginning of the two year band and move through it over the two years, but for some children it means that they can dip in and out to fill gaps that they might have, or to provide challenges.
Children are now staying with the same teacher for two years, so that they can continue their academic development through each Curriculum Level without interruption. This also has a positive impact on social relationships and decreases anxiety about change. Having a bigger range in ages (than a single year group would) also provides opportunities for leadership and builds confidence.
If you would like to know more about the New Zealand Curriculum levels please check out the school’s website. There is information in the Parent Zone under School Report Info.
God Bless
Linda

Sacred Heart Cathedral Wellington - On line Art Auction
The inaugural Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Charity Art Auction to raise funds for the restoration and seismic strengthening of the cathedral is coming together well as we gear up for the launch on Saturday 19 March 2022.
The uncertainty around Covid-19 has created the opportunity to move our charity art auction online, so we can reach more people than the original event we had planned. We are new to this but so excited to bring this to you and look forward to your support.
Among the artists exhibiting their wonderful works are Del Te Rito, Charlotte Hird, Jim Gorman, Olympia Osborne, Sonia Treacy, Ellen Donnelly and many more. We are so blessed to have them come on board.
Registering for the auction is easy. All you need is your mobile phone or access to internet on your computer.
The auction will run 24 x 7 from 19 March to 27 March 2022.
If you have any questions, feel free to email mcsh.march22art@gmail.com
The website for the auction can be found: www.galabid.com/art4icon
