MSE November Newsletter
Check out what our students at MSE accomplished last month!
From the Desk of A. Pruitt...
I hope everyone had a safe and joyous Thanksgiving break. What a fantastic first semester! It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of the first semester for the 2018-19 school year. Our students continue to amaze me with their commitment to academic excellence! With the increasing ACT and benchmark scores, our students are showing their learning ability each day. Semester exams are right around the corner. All students will have end of semester exams, so please make sure they are at school on time and ready to do their best.
I would personally like to thank our students, teachers, and coaches for a great first semester. Besides all of the impressive work happening inside the classroom, we saw a lot of great achievements by our fall/winter athletes. I cannot wait to see what the second semester has in store!
Remember to enjoy the holidays with your family and friends. Hug your children tightly, and please help them through the stressful end of semester exams. I look forward to seeing each and every student again in the New Year.
A letter from Mrs. Sherman, K-8 Counselor
Hello MSE Family!
I am pleased to share the wonderful things we have going on with our counseling department for our K-8 students.
I offer group therapy for students who need emotional support. This therapeutic group aims to create a safe space for students to share, and hopefully, fully open up. Students also get the opportunity to fellowship with peers who have similar life experiences.
Our next step is to coordinate with the high school to provide mentors for our younger students.
Thank you to all the parents and community members for your continued support!
Mrs. Sherman
Academics at MSE
Students will be taking their semester exams across Memphis School of Excellence on 12/13, 12/14, and 12/17. Please make sure your student is at school so that they can complete these exams.
Report cards for first semester will be sent home when we return from winter break.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
At the end of the drive, over four hundred cans were collected and our students were able to assemble forty three boxes of goods for the holiday season.
Veteran's Day Program
MSE was also able to hear from Destiny Herron, an alumna who is currently serving in the National Guard. Check out the video below to see how our students' lives are shaped by veterans and how we can say thank you!
College and Career Fair
From community colleges, to HBCUs to large state schools like the University of Alabama, our student body had the chance to talk with recruiters to see if students could see themselves on campus in 2019 and beyond!
High School Counselor's Corner with Ms. Ward
This has been a great first semester. In the month of November, our school hosted its third annual college and career fair. During this time, our high school students were able to meet with college recruiters to learn more information about their perspective schools. Seniors also attended Shelby County’s HBCU college fair where several received acceptance letters. Over 80% of the class of 2019 have been accepted to college in addition to $540,000 is scholarship offers. I would also like to highlight the class of 2019 for their dedication and hard work. Thirty seniors increased their ACT score and the class average rose to 18.3.

How Can I Help You?
As a school counselor, my most important job is to help students succeed in school. I am in charge of looking out for your child’s academic progress, personal/social development and emotional well-being. Communication between the school counselor and parents is vital. If you have a concern about your child, you may send an email to rward@sememphis.org.
High Employment Opportunities
Several of our students participate in the Memphis Ambassadors Program sponsored by the city of Memphis Youth Services. This program is designed to empower students to be active participants and give back to their community. Students receive a monthly stipend based on their grade point average and other community service requirements. For more information about this program and to apply, please click the photo below or visit www.cityofmemphisyouth.org. The application opens on December 1st. Students ages 14-18 are encouraged to apply.
Athletic Coordinator Update
Basketball
Both the boys and the girls team have been training hard all month to prepare for opening night of the 2018-19 basketball season. Two games into the season, all of the running, lifting and training is paying off. Both the boys and the girls teams defeated their first opponent, Oakhaven High School, with ease as both won by more than 25+ points! The next game against Soulsville charter school was another show of dominance for the boys as they defeated them by 31 points. The girls fought a tough battle and lost a very close game by 5 points. If you are missing these teams play, then you are missing out on an exciting night!
Bowling
Bowling completed its first season this year lead by the incomparable Mrs. Pruitt. Even though it was their first year, our students showed great promise to be a quality bowlers as the years pass. They were bumped out of the playoffs but will be back next year stronger and even better.
