Webinar #8: Intervention Strategies for Improving Pragmatic Communication in School-Aged Children
Original Date: May 15, 2020 (9 a.m. - Noon)
New Date: June 5, 2020 (9 a.m. - Noon)
Presenter: Michelle Ivey, PhD/CCC-SLP
2.5 TSHA CEUs
Description: Often, children who have communication disorders participate in intervention activities which target easily definable problems in semantics, morphology, and syntax. These deficits can, in some cases, be confounded by associated disorders in language use. Alternatively, pragmatic language disorders may be the primary communication deficit. This seminar is designed to consider a variety of ways to provide intervention to children who are impacted by pragmatic disorders in many settings and with various skill levels.
State Performance Plan (SPP) Indicator 7 reports the percent of preschool children with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) who demonstrate improved:
- Positive social-emotional skills (including social relationships);
- Acquisition and use of knowledge and skills (including early language/communication and early literacy); and
- Use of appropriate behaviors to meet their needs.

House Bill (HB) 2059, passed during the 86th Legislative Session, requires certain healthcare practitioners who provide direct patient care to complete a Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC)-approved human trafficking prevention training course in order to renew their license. Information on the bill implementation changes can be found on TDLR's website here.
The TDLR license types related to our field that are impacted by HB 2059 and will be required to comply with the new training requirement are:
• Audiologist
• Assistant in Audiology
• Intern in Audiology
• Speech-Language Pathologist
• Intern in Speech-Language Pathology
• Assistant in Speech-Language Pathology
• Hearing Instrument Fitter & Dispenser
The training requirement goes into effect on September 1, 2020, for every renewal on or after that date. HHSC has approved one training course and posted it on their website here. Additional courses will be posted as they are approved. You can find more information on HHSC’s Texas Human Trafficking Resource Center web page.
In light of the current COVID-19 crisis, all face-to-face sessions, trainings, and meetings hosted by ESC Region 11 are canceled through June 30, 2020. The following is a list of online professional development scheduled in the coming weeks. July courses will be added as soon as they are finalized.
