August 2023 Edition 11
OCTOBER 2023-2024 EDITION 3
Alpha Notes
Well, we’ve officially made it to Fall, and I can’t believe what the Wolfpack has accomplished so far, or all of the great things we have coming up this month at Whitlow! Our administrative team is out in classrooms every day, and we’re constantly telling one another about the teaching and learning we’re seeing all around. There’s nothing we love more than catching a lesson that has the students engaged and excited, and that’s exactly what we’ve been seeing on a daily basis! In addition to the classroom learning going on between 8:20 and 3:00, we’ve just started clubs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so the excitement and creativity are now stretching beyond our typical hours. Whitlow teachers and support staff truly go above and beyond to make learning come alive!
It has also been wonderful to see our family involvement growing. We love seeing family members joining their children for lunch, seeing the PTO and parent support for our fundraiser and for the book fair, and seeing the “Rock Stars” of Whitlow…The Wolfpack Dads! No offense to our fabulous moms/ladies, but it’s a bit like having a celebrity in the building when we have a Wolf Pack Dad helping for the day! The best part is that the opportunities for involvement and for coming together as a school community are only just beginning!
Continue to keep an eye out each month in the “Howling Herald,” and each week in your teacher newsletters for upcoming events. Between Movie Night, Family Math Night, Youth Night at an upcoming FCHS football game, and of course, Parent Conferences, we are looking forward to building the relationships that help our students excel. Data fully supports the fact that a strong relationship between home and school is one of the best ways to support student learning and growth in all areas. We all have the same goal in mind…to help every Whitlow student be the best “them” they can be. And we know how fortunate we are to be on that journey together with you!
Go Wolves!

Conferences will begin the week of 10-16-23
October 19th is an Online Learning Day & no school on October 20th
You will receive information from your child's teacher regarding scheduling conferences the week of 10/16. October 19th that week will be an Online Learning Day for Forsyth County Schools. Students should access Canvas by logging in to ClassLink using their school username and password. From the ClassLink dashboard, select the red Canvas icon.
From the Canvas Home Page, students will need to access both their Homeroom teacher's course and their Specials teacher's course.
On the Online Learning Day, you can expect that:
- Teachers will post lessons to their course home page in Canvas by the start of the normal school day.
- Students/parents may contact teachers using the Canvas Inbox option for messages. Parents may also email teachers directly if necessary.
- Teachers will be available to answer questions throughout the day; however, response times will vary as teachers will also be conducting conferences.
- Elementary students will complete assignments for Math, ELA, Science/Social Studies, and Specials.
- Households with multiple students using the same device will need to completely log out/close the browser when switching between students to alleviate any confusion between accounts.
October 20th is a Professional Development Day for county employees and is a student holiday, so no school.
What is Canvas?
Canvas is a learning management system that replaced itslearning. This school year, all teachers and students will use Canvas on a daily basis. Similar to itslearning, your child will access Canvas on his/her ClassLink dashboard to access courses, instructional materials, assignments, and important dates at anytime. For more information, click here.

Has your child mentioned the golden spoons to you? Golden spoons are part of our reward system in the cafeteria that classes can earn by working together to follow the Whitlow Way: Be a Leader, Be Respectful, and Be a Problem Solver. If your student's class earns the most golden spoons for the quarter, they get to win a prize for their class! This might be something like extra recess or an ice pop! All of our students work hard each day to earn their golden spoon, and YOU can help them! Being prepared is part of earning the golden spoon. If your student brings their lunch to school, please make sure you include condiments, napkins, and utensils in their lunchbox. The end of the quarter is in just a week and a half, and all the golden spoons will be counted up to determine the winners for each grade!

Here is a link to our Whitlow "online fair". Here, you can preview books with your students and/or order books online. All books ordered online will be shipped to Whitlow for distribution.
We will host a family event on Friday, October 6th from 4:00-6:00 before PTO movie night.
Please consider setting up an e-gift card for your student(s). This is a safe and easy way for your student to shop. You are also able to purchase e-gift cards for your student's teacher if you would like.
