A Message from the Principal
Northern Elementary School News
Holiday Greetings
It's pretty "Minnesotan" to bring up the weather in a conversation, but here I go....
Our warm weather has helped keep illness levels low. I am so thankful for that! There are not many years when sidewalk chalk art still adorns the sidewalks near the playground on December 4th.
On the flip side, we are also giving more reminders to students about wearing jackets. Please reinforce our message that jackets are a must each day, as the change in wind can make a 40 degree day feel very frigid - very quickly. We experienced lots of cold noses and hands two weeks ago on a bright sunny day with blistering wind speeds that doubled over the course of our recess block.
Thank you again for your participation in parent conferences last month. It's an important opportunity to set goals and share successes for each child. I also want to thank you for supporting our book fair. It's a nice way to celebrate a good conference!
The Veterans Day program, led by our third graders, was a wonderful ceremony of thanks and reflection. It was a meaningful program for all. We appreciate the participation of the color guard from the American Legion - Ralph Gracie Post #14.
Our students also participated in two significant service projects over the course of the last month. We assisted with food collection for the Stuff a Truck food shelf campaign and our third graders conducted a Blanket Drive to support Village of Hope. Thank you so much for your donations and support.
We have some fun new options for school spiritwear. They won't be ready before Christmas, but check them out if you are interested.
Thank you for your votes in the "Best of Bemidji" campaign. We sure felt the love when we were on the list as the best public elementary school in Bemidji. We return that vote of praise right back to you! You are a dedicated and wonderful group of families to partner with and we appreciate you.
Later in this message, I have included a link that has a lot of resources and FAQ about helping your child flourish as a reader. We continue to monitor every child's progress, and we continue to be so impressed with all the growth we are seeing. At home, you can help by finding creative ways to make a little time for reading and discussing each day. It will make the world of difference for your budding readers.
December is a busy month. Check out the major happenings for our school below. The calendar year and this school year are zooming right by us at rapid speed. I hope to slow down a bit and savor these last few weeks before the new year; hopefully you get a chance to do that as well.
I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season filled with all the things you hold dearest.

We encourage each family to be actively involved in their child’s education. Support comes in many ways. Families and caregivers can become active with our parent teacher organization, volunteer in the classroom, or simply designate a special time each night to talk about your child’s day and spend 15 minutes reading together.
