The Glacier Bear Connection
SHERROD ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER VOL 21.25
Week of February 8-12, 2021
Your Help Is Needed
We love offering these fun family engagement nights but they are only possible if Sherrod maintains Title 1 status. The percentage of free and reduced students needed to qualify as a Title 1 school has increased to 50%. Sherrod is currently at 39.8%.
We need your help. Even if your child doesn't want to eat hot lunch, your qualification would support us maintaining our Title 1 status. Every application counts. The amount of funding we receive is directly related to the number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Title 1 funds provide parent engagement events, computers, additional learning opportunities and hiring staff to support student success. Your application is critical to Sherrod maintaining Title 1 status.
Multiple ways you can qualify:
- Qualify under income guidelines
- Qualify under Migrant Ed (see flier below)
- Homeless
- Migrant
- Runaway
- Foster Child
- Enrolled in Head Start or an eligible pre-kindergarten program
Please take a moment to complete this application. If you have any questions, please call 761-4100.
FREE & REDUCED MEAL PROGRAM
Parents can submit applications to enroll their student(s) in the free and reduced meal program. Applications should be submitted annually and may be completed online through SchoolCafe or via a printable application. Paper applications cannot be submitted via email or fax, but must be submitted to the student's school or directly to Nutrition Services (690 E Cope Industrial Way, Palmer, AK 99645).
The application process will require the following information be provided:
- Total household size
- Income for all household members (Income guidelines are available here)
- Student name(s)
- Additional information that is helpful, though not required, includes the student's birth date, enrolled school, and MSBSD ID number
Questions regarding the application process can be directed to (907) 861-5100.
If you say yes to any of these activities, you qualify for free and reduced lunch REGARDLESS of income. See flier below

Notes from Nurse Jenski
If your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms, please keep them home
- Cough
- Fever chills
- Runny nose/Congestion
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath/Difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Nausea/Vomiting/Diarrhea
- Muscle/Joint/Body aches
- New loss of taste or smell
Any of these symptoms listed may be symptoms of COVID-19. Please contact your health care provider and follow their guidance; they may want to test your child for COVID-19. If your child has the above symptoms, they will need to follow one the the 3 options below
- - Follow a 10-day isolation from the onset of symptoms
- - Obtain a negative COVID-19 test and provide the copy to the school nurse
- - Obtain a note from their health care provider stating that the symptoms they have are related to another illness and NOT COVID-19
There are certain criteria that must be met before your child can come back to school after having any of these symptoms. Please contact Nurse Dana at 907-761-4103 or dana.jenski@matsuk12.us to discuss the plan for returning to school. This is a very different year, normally many of these symptoms would not be worrisome. To be able to keep our doors open to in-person learning we must follow our district policies and the Alaska Smart Start 2020 Return To School Options.
Virtue of the Week
The virtue of the week is CONSIDERATION. Each week classes will select a student of the week who has demonstrated the week's virtue. Those students will be part of the morning show on Fridays.
Consideration is being thoughtful of other people and their feelings. You consider how your actions affect them. You pay careful attention to what others like and don't like, and do things that give them happiness.
