WM 4th Grade Curriculum Update

Reading and Writing
Reading
We will begin a unit titled "Historical Fiction Book Clubs". In this unit, we will be reading and interpreting the book Number the Stars together as a class. Students will also meet in book clubs to have thoughtful conversations about the books they are reading as a small group.
The big work of this unit is for students to:
I can compare and contrast the point of view from different stories.
I can compare and contrast theme across multiple stories
Writing
Students will be crafting historical fiction stories where they will pick a specific point in history and take on the persona of someone who lived through that event. The big work for this unit is developing point of view skills and taking on different perspectives.

Finishing Unit 6
Starting Unit 7: Patterns and Problems
Use standard algorithms to calculate with multi-digit numbers
Divide a multi-digit number by a 1-digit number
Solve story problems with multiple steps & operations
Review equivalent fractions, and add & subtract fractions and mixed numbers
Write equations to represent story problems
Convert measurement from one unit to another within a system of measurement (example: inches to feet)
5th Grade Math
Starting Unit 7: Division and Decimals
- Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers
- Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with fractions
- Solve story problems with fractions
Science
Throughout the school year 4th graders will study:
- Rocks and Minerals
- Electricity and Magnetism
- Structures of Life
-Focus on the life cycle of trout and the life cycle of plants
Social Studies
Throughout the school year 4th graders will study:
History of Wisconsin
Five Regions of Wisconsin
United States Regions
LMC - Library
We’ll continue our exploration of the Destiny catalog, including placing holds on books from other schools. We’ll also put our Makerspace equipment to work!
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: Composing rhythmic ostinatos as a way to study rhythm and time signatures. Toward the end of the month, we will begin learning recorder basics, including the notes B, A, and G
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: starting a large ukulele unit! Students will use the C, C7, and F chords to play famous songs like London Bridge, Skip to My Lou, and Merrily We Roll Along. We will finish our ukulele unit with a personal composition, which will then be used as our final assessment.
Technology
Students will present their presentation about digital citizenship or a digital superhero to their class. Students will begin to uses spreadsheet tools or graphing programs to represent and analyze data. Students will continue to strengthen their typing speed and words per minute
Art
How can you share your art with the world? Is everyone an artist? (Fashion Show)
PE
Students will participate in Spring fitness testing and our Track & Field Unit. We will try to get outside as much as possible.
