Classical Conversations
Broken Arrow, OK Trinity Lutheran Campus
For Week 16
What a fun day we had yesterday! We painted Michelangelo Frescos, learned about the flow of magma, and made new friends. We had eight families attend our Open House. Our kids did a fantastic job of making them feel welcomed! Thank you for all of our tutors hard work and handling the extra guests.
For art this week we will be learning about Duer and making prints using paint. Bring an old T-shirt.
Homeschooling Through High School
“In classical education, we learn the grammar of a subject first, then we sort, classify, and understand the information, and finally, we ask the students to teach back or use the subject creatively. These three stages are called grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric stages. Modern educators have tossed out this idea. They concentrate on creative expression in the primary grades and then spend the rest of the time surveying content with the goal of making a competent score on a test.
“If you pull out of classical education before high school, your student will have learned the grammar of the subjects and worked to understand it, but you will not be giving your student the opportunity to get to the good stuff—to use it: to solve real problems, to express themselves well, to write original essays, to enter into debate. It would be like purchasing a gown, getting your hair and nails done, and rather than going to the prom, staying home and watching TV.”
—Courtney Sanford, “All Dressed Up for the Prom, but Will You Go?”

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV)

Open Houses and Informational Meetings
Our next Open House is Tuesday, February 16th from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.
We will have an Information Meeting from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. I highly encourage visitors to stay for the Information Meeting so they can understand the "why" behind what they observe that morning. If they just attend the Open House and do not go to an Information Meeting then they may not understand the philosophy of Classical Education and Classical Conversations. So if you invite friends and family to attend an Open House please stay with them for the Informational Meeting. They are more likely to stay if you do! Also let them know they can bring lunch and eat with us that day.
Children are welcome at the Open House! I will have enough art and science supplies ready. If you have friends that are planning to attend the Open House please let me know how many children to prepare for. I don't want to run out of Art Supplies for them.

Week 16 Recap
Today we learned about Michelangelo.
Here is a step by step process you can do at home. We did not have time to use glue but I think it would be neat to go through the entire process. You can use Elmer's glue.
