Student Led Conferences - November 21st and 23rd from 4:30 - 7:00 pm for Kindergarten to Grade 4 Students

Student led conferences are an opportunity to meet with your child's teacher and to see the wonderful work that has been happening in the classroom during this past term. The teacher will conference with you and your child for a ten minute period. Your child and teacher will share his/her learning with you. Children and parents are invited to be in the room for an additional 10 minutes before or after your conference time to allow sufficient time for browsing and discussing the learning.

Communication about learning can occur effectively in student involved and student-led conferences. The more student involvement there is, the more effectively the communication can support learning.

Please be aware that there may be more than one family in the classroom at the same time. If you or the teacher feel an additional private conversation is warranted without your child or another family present, this can be scheduled at a separate time, before or after the student led evening and can take place face to face or by telephone. This can be requested from either yourself or your child's teacher. Please feel free to request this from your child's teacher if required.

All parents are asked to register for a student led conference appointment for each of their children at www.woodlawn.schoolappointments.com . Please follow the instructions in the handout that your child will bring home this week. All instructions will also be posted on our website: woodlawn.hsd.ca

The booking site will be available from November 1st to 20th for booking appointments. We ask all parents to register online for an appointment by the end of the day on November 20th. If you are having difficulties, you may call the school for assistance. If you do not have internet access please call the school to arrange an appointment for your child's conference.

Vice Principal's Message

It is hard to believe that November is here and our first report cards of the year will be coming out this month. While teachers and students have been working hard on academics, they have also been working hard on social and emotional learning (SEL). We, the staff at Woodlawn, believe that developing the whole child is an important part of what we do as early years educators. To do this teachers employ different resources and strategies depending on the grade level and the individual needs in each class. Examples of SEL resources include Roots of Empathy, Zones of Regulation, The Multiple Intelligences, Bucket Filling, and Second Step. Many teachers use class meetings as a way to teach students how to problem solve appropriately and effectively. Some teachers are using Chat Buddies to help students make meaningful connections with their peers. SEL teaching does not take away from academic learning. We believe that when students have their social and emotional needs met, they are more ready to learn. Taking the time to help our students grow in the area of social and emotional learning will help them to be the best learners they can be.

Student Safety

Please call the school between 8:00 and 9:00 am or write in your child’s agenda before hand if you know they will be absent or will be late because of an appointment. You can also e-mail us at woodlawn@hsd.ca, leave a voicemail outside of school hours at 204-326-6110 or enter attendance through your parent portal account. As a security measure our policy is to phone home if we have not heard from the parent/guardian of an absent student. If necessary we will also phone workplaces and emergency contacts to make sure the student is safe. Any student that is arriving late is to check in at the office before proceeding to class.

In the interest of maximizing learning time in the classroom and keeping interruptions to a minimum, please make "home time" arrangements (including school pick up times, appointments and other arrangements) with your child(ren) before they leave for school in the morning.

Please write a note in your child's agenda if home time arrangements are different from your normal routine, whether your child is to go home with someone else, or to wait at the office to be picked up. Notes in the agenda will help to eliminate confusion for the student and teacher at the end of the school day (3:45).
