Mrs. Petersen's Class News

Week Of November 10, 2014

November is flying by! Did you realize that this month we only have 1 full week of school?!
November brings lots of learning as well! With Veteran's Day, Election Day and Thanksgiving, we have been pretty busy! Read on to see what we have been working on!

Reader's Workshop...

This week kin Reader's Workshop, we will be finishing up our Tricky Words unit! We have learned how to tackle the tricky words that we come across in our books and how to be a great Reading Coach to ourselves and each other! We will begin our new unit on Characters next week... just in time for some of our favorite Christmas story characters such as the Grinch!

Math Workshop...

This week in math, Kindergartners are learning all the ways to make 10. This strategy will help build a strong foundation for problem solving in math. The children are beginning to see the patterns in the numbers as we make combinations of 10. Please try to practice this at home as well.
This week, First Graders are working on Fact Families! They have learned that fact families have 3 numbers that make up 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences. They have practiced using the commutative property to help them build fact families. For example, 3+6=9 and 6+3=9. Next week we will be working on the associative property to add 3 numbers!

Writer's Workshop...

In Writer's Workshop, both Kindergartners and First Graders have begun our "Persuasive Writing" unit. We have learned that sometimes we can write letters to get something that we would like or to help make a change in our world for the better. We will continue our Persuasive Writing Unit to include our reasons why we need things to change.

Social Studies...

In Social Studies this week, we have spent some time learning all about Veteran's Day! We learned about who Veteran's are and the sacrifices that they have given for our country. We will also spend the rest of November learning all about the first Thanksgiving! We will be learning all about the Pilgrims, Native Americans and the traditions that have been passed through time.

Homework this week was BEAUTIFUL! Thank you so much for your help!
