Chunk #1: Getting Comfortable with Poetry
- Read from the poem books, copies in the file folders, or online
- After reading several poems, reflect on what you noticed about techniques the authors used.
- Answer the prompt "I noticed" on your Kid Blog and explain what techniques you noticed authors use.
Chunk #2: Digging Deeper
- Follow the chart on this document (Poetry Dissection)
- Read poems closely using your How to Read a Poem Document.
- Determine the theme of at least 4 poems
Check for Understanding
- Get the Paired Poetry text from the counter
- Read the paired poems "Hills" and "Afternoon on a Hill" and mark up the texts using "How to Read a Poem"
- Answer the questions on this Google Form
Chunk #3: Analyzing Poetry
Google Classroom Explanatory Paragraph
Compare and contrast the information on the TTTT chart. Choose one of the following questions.
- Teacher Example
Find two poems whose themes are similar. How did each author approach and develop the theme? Did they use similar strategies?
Find two poems where the author used the same techniques to enhance the meaning of the poem. Explain how/why this was effective.

Chunk #4: Taking it a Step Further
Writer's Workshop: Being a Poet
- Try out a technique that you noticed in a poem. Publish your work on Kid Blog
- Try out one of these types of poems! Publish your work on your Kid Blog
Poetry Recording
- Choose some of your favorite poems that you read in this unit
- Practice reading them with appropriate tone and annunciation
- Record yourself using Flubaroo, Powtoons, Youtube, etc.
- Create animation, pictures, etc to enhance the poem
- Mrs. Goulding would like to use your recording for future students!
