# Collins & Co. Room 204

## Welcome!

Hello Parents-

Thank you for all your help at home to get the students ready for the Winter Sing. They did such a wonderful job!!

Ms. Collins and Mrs. Cucco

## Math

We've been working hard on Chapter 4: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. So far, our students have practiced several methods to multiply proper and improper fractions. We looked for common factors to simplify before multiplying, which made it easier to find the product in simplest form. Students found that drawing pictures often helps to clarify their thinking and to see their answers.

We began exploring how to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number and how to apply this knowledge into a real-world problem. Students are finding that drawing bar models are a great way to solve problems without having to do the math!

Students are beginning to explore non-fiction texts. We read National Geographic to find evidence within the text. Reading the article with a close eye allowed us to find specific evidence to support out thinking.

Next week we will work on putting this information together to write a well though out and planned response to our reading.

## Writing Workshop

Our personal narratives have been published! This week we wrote fictional narratives in response to the prompt- "If I lived in a snow globe". We took time to plan out our stories and thought of ways to provide our reader with vivid mental images. Students worked hard to apply their ideas into well thought out paragraphs including introductions and conclusion. Way to go 5th grade writers!
