National Parks with a 21st Century Twist!
Our Codologie 6th graders have been working hard at applying all their programming and engineering knowledge to creating a National Park diorama that goes along with a research project they've been doing for Benchmark Unit 3: Relationships with Nature. They've been reading all about Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir: their love for nature and the part they played in establishing our United States National Parks.
Yosemite National Park
LEDs represent water, fire, and even a light inside a tent not visible in this picture.
Bryce Canyon National Park
When you push the button, stars slowly light up one at a time beside an always-lit moon.
Grand Teton National Park
At the time of this picture, students were in the middle of putting cotton over their LEDs to make snow that glows in the night sky over the snowy mountains.
Aesthetics are Important!
A big focus for our students was hiding wires. We want to see the art, not the hardware! As such, our students had to engineer ways to integrate their LEDs into their art without the wires and other parts showing. Here, a student is taping LEDs in place on the back of her project.
Come Visit a Showcase!
Our students will be presenting their research projects and dioramas at a showcase in these last few weeks before winter break.
Feel free to drop in to any of the showcases below. There's no need to stay the whole time unless you want to - you'll see wonderful things in even just 5-10 minutes.
What's Next?
After break, students will learn about servo motors and ultrasonic sensors. Then, they'll get to work on their entries for Play|Code|Compete: achievements of Ancient Civilizations.
Heather will continue to improve curriculum, prepare for Play|Code|Compete, mentor the Bytes & Bots mentors, support classroom teachers, and much more!
