A Message from the Leadership Team
Adult Education
As we wrap up the spring term there is no better way to re-energize for our summer session than with a workshop on Rigor, Relevance and Respect in ESOL Instruction—Addressing the Skills and Strategies Our Learners Need hosted by FLDOE Division of Career and Adult Education and ACE of Florida. This workshop is presented by Jayme Adelson-Goldstein an ESOL professional development specialist, curriculum consultant and author of the Oxford Picture Dictionary. All ESOL instructors are highly encouraged to participate in this opportunity on Saturday, June 11, 2016 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Lorenzo Walker Technical College. Follow the link above to register for this workshop. Please email Ingrid Figares with any registration difficulties.
Last week we challenged instructors to share how they incorporate Newsela within their instruction. Read how Lionel L'Esperance ABE/GED instructor at GGLC and Rose Bleiweiss ABE/GED instructor at LWTC use Newsela with their students:
Lionel L'Esperance - As reading is the cornerstone of the GED, newsela articles encourages reading to be purposeful and focused by incorporate Science, Social Studies and RLA. Students with varied reading levels can read the same article and actively participate in the activity. Student learn and practice test taking skills by reading assigned articles and responding to the question at the end.
Rose Bleiweiss - Students work in groups, highlighting unknown words. Then on chart paper they respond to the following:
- I have never seen this word
- I think this word means
- I know this word means
As a group, they split up the words so everyone is looking up one of the words.
In the end they share out their new found words.

Best Practices
Adult learners have typically gathered more life experienced and accumulated a broader knowledge base than younger students. As such, when you're designing your learning objectives for adult audiences, you'll want to take their experience and educational background into account. In other words, it is of high importance to assess your audience carefully. What is the highest level of education they've completed? Which particular tasks are they usually asked to perform while at work?
