September is Suicide Awareness Month
Although families and friends may struggle to address this topic, it is a real risk factor for teens. For young adults between the ages of 10-24 years old, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death.
The counselor's office maintains a list of resources in our community and can make referrals, as needed. This link is to an article that will provide more facts and dispel myths about this important topic.

PSAT Information for 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders
All BHS students in grade 9 will take the PSAT 8/9 and all students in grades 10 and 11 will take the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. (No registration or payment required for BHS students.)
Taking an SAT practice test is good practice for the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 because the assessments measure the same skills and knowledge in ways that make sense for different grade levels. Get started today by visiting www.khanacademy.org.
Students can also download the SAT Daily Practice App in the App Store.
Kaplan is offering a NEW and FREE test prep opportunity for PSAT https://www.kaptest.com/psat/pages/psat-prep-live

TSI (Texas Success Initiative)
The TSI Assessment is a program designed to help colleges determine if students are ready for college-level course work in the general areas of reading, writing and mathematics. When you are an incoming college student in Texas, you will be required to take the TSI Assessment — unless you are exempt (read below) — to determine your readiness for college-level work. Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course that matches your skill level or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college level courses.
Exemptions
Have met the minimum college readiness standard on SAT®, or ACT.
Have successfully completed college-level English and math courses
We encourage students to check with their college of choice to determine if they need to take the TSI.
The TSI for SENIORS ONLY will be offered at BHS on November 16, 2016. We encourage students who are not exempt to take the TSI while still in high school. Students who know they are attending a 2-year college are also encouraged to take the TSI if not exempt. Registration will be available on November 9, 2016.

AVID Staff Spotlight
Kate Fields
Kate Fields teaches English 4, Pre-AP Spanish 3, and AP Spanish 4. She attended Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University. She took graduate classes at Hardin Simmons and UT Arlington. Ms. Field’s majored in British and Spanish Literature. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree, and she is only 2 classes away from her Masters in Education to be a Literacy/Reading Specialist. While in college she was involved in newspaper, English honor society, & tutored pre-med students in English and Spanish. Kate’s favorite college memory was teaching exchange students from Iran to do the "Cotton Eyed Joe". When asked what skills she learned in college that she is able to apply to her personal and professional life she said, “I learned to take the time to write well and to do my very best work all of the time. I learned to work with all kinds of people from many cultures. I learned how to work with both kind and interesting people, and also with rude, and disrespectful people. I learned that I am responsible for my own learning, and that the need to learn new things is never over. Most importantly, I understood that learning is a choice, and no one can do it for me. If I work hard enough, I can learn anything. I was surprised to find out that I did not even have to like something to do well at it. I did learn, though, that I had to work harder if I did not like something.” When asked, “What advice would you give to students who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” Mrs. Fields replied, “#1) Read everything you can! Read news and weather. Read history, fiction, essays, biographies, and comedy. Read everything! The more you read, the better you will read and the more improved your writing will be too. Then, you can teach yourself anything you need to learn. If you can't read and write well, many doors are closed to you, and college is much harder. #2) Learn to be cooperative and to use basic courtesy words. Learn when to speak casually and when to speak more respectfully and politely. Rudeness is another thing that slams many doors in your face! Bosses, coaches, professors, and other people in charge have no time for rude, uncooperative people."
Jeffrey McKrell
Jeffrey McKrell teaches 9th and 10th grade AP World History and AP Human Geography here at BHS. Mr. McKrell was in the Navy. He served in the Middle East, Eastern, Southern, and Southeast Asia. When asked, “What impacted your life most from your experience in the military?” he said, “It taught me to earn the things I want in life through hard work. Never expect someone to give you anything.” Mr. McKrell went to college at the University of Texas at Arlington. He received a bachelor’s degree with a Major in History and a Minor in Education. His favorite memory was making new friends in the education department. When asked, “What skills did you learn in college that you were able to apply to your professional life?” McKrell replied, “How to effectively write essays”. When asked, “What advice would you offer to students who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” he said, “There are always ways to get a free education! If you have any questions about the Navy or about The University of Texas at Arlington, feel free to go to Mr. Jeffrey McKrell. He will be happy to help and answer your questions.
