Celebrating Growth and Embracing Changes
As we celebrate the journeys of our students, staff, and families of Saint John XXII, we also are preparing for some important and exciting changes ahead. Students moving to new grades and new classrooms in the fall. Our grade fours are spreading their wings and flying to a new learning environment. Last night we welcomed many of our new families to Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten! While change is exciting, it can also bring some trepidation and worry. This is natural and we help one another through this with patience, care, and faith. One of the most important things we can teach our children is how to work through the anticipated changes with faith and trust. God has designed each of us in His image and has wonderful plans for our journeys. Through change and challenges we learn and discover the gifts and strengths we have. At Saint John XXIII, staff and parents work diligently to prepare our students for the transitions ahead.
As parents and teachers, we often want to smooth the path and make things easier, however, like the butterfly, our children need to work through challenges to learn skills and strategies to become the amazing people God calls them to be. As our grade threes watched with delighted anticipation as the butterfly struggled to make its way out of the cocoon, some of our softest hearts want to “help” them out but we know that God gave them what they needed to pump their wings and fly. The butterflies had a safe environment, food ready, and a lot of love surrounding them. Thank-you to our parents for the continued trust as we work together to help all our children “fly”.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Safety for our SJ Kids and the Air Quality
As always your child's safety and well-being is a high priority at Saint John XXIII. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is the decision making tool for schools to use when determining if outdoor activities should proceed. As you are aware, due to smoke from the northern wildfires, the AQHI in Edmonton and surrounding region today is being impacted.
Whenever the index value reaches the high risk zone ( 7- 10+) it is recommended that schools choose indoor recess and where possible reschedule strenuous outdoor activities. Children, the elderly and those with respiratory and heart conditions are at most risk. We will be following this recommendation by checking our local AQHI before any outside activities and if the index is anywhere in the High Risk zone, students will stay inside.
Please ensure that your child's teacher is up to date on any respiratory conditions and let us know if precautions are needed outside of the ones mentioned above. Thank-you.
Pre-Kindergarten: Limited spaces in morning class, Spaces still available in the afternoon! Come journey with us!
One of the unique elements to Pre-K at Saint John XXIII is our Early Learning Music Specialist, Mrs. Melanie Doderai, who passionately and enthusiastically takes our Pre-K and Kindergarten students on a musical journey throughout the year that fosters important fine arts exploration and movement.
Please contact the school to register for our exciting and innovative Pre-Kindergarten program. We would love to Play, Learn, and Grow with our child!
Thank-you for coming to our Pre/K Information Evening!
Demographic Confirmation Forms-please complete and submit ASAP
The “EICS Demographic Confirmation Form” for the 2019-2020 school year, is now available for you to complete and submit, for each of your children attending an Elk Island Catholic School. The form is found online in your PowerSchool Parent Portal.
This form is a mandatory document and is required to be updated for every student each year, as it could greatly impact you with respect to the Canada Revenue Agency information and Immigration when they request validation of your information. Alberta Education requires that we obtain a detailed update of student demographics on an annual basis. Funding they provide for your child's education is conditional to us receiving these updates and making them part of the student's record. We would appreciate you completing and submitting this form, for each of your children, as soon as possible.
Please contact our school secretary, Jeannette Wilson, at 780-998-7777 if you have any questions or require assistance.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
