First Lego League Launch
Launch of the 2018-19 season Into Orbit
Gather your crew and get ready to explore, challenge and innovate in the demanding and inspiring expanse we call space!
The 2018/2019 FIRST® LEGO® League season requires you to work together to break out of your earthly constraints. Do you have what it takes to go INTO ORBIT
We’re SO excited for the upcoming season. The stars have aligned and all four FIRST® programs will be exploring space – we think it’s a great way to celebrate FIRST‘s 30th anniversary!
For FIRST® LEGO® League, this season also marks a special milestone. Two decades ago, the inaugural FIRST LEGO League Challenge centered around space, and in 2019 – a full 50 years after the first humans walked the moon – we’re sparking curiosity and igniting a passion for exploration and discovery with a return to where it all began.
FIRST LEGO League challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. During the INTO ORBIT season, teams will choose and solve a real-world problem in the Project. They will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FIRST LEGO League’s signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.
The new challenge will be released on 1st August and details will be available on this website. The challenge sets (mat and missions) will be despatched in the new school term from mid- August onwards. They will not be despatched to a school that is still on summer holiday, therefore the majority of schools in England will receive their challenge sets in the first week of September. Scottish and Irish schools start their terms earlier.
Details about this season’s challenge available from the Challenge web page on 1st August
This course is aimed at FLL coaches, UKS2 teachers and KS3 teachers.

Using Technology to Support Greater Depth Reading
Pupils who become fluent before the end of a Key Stage should work at ‘greater depth’ within the expected standard. In reading, this involves pupils gaining a deep understanding of what they read. To gain this depth of understanding they need, over time, to develop:
• a rich, varied and sophisticated vocabulary that they use in a wide variety of situations.
• a range of inference skills, including making comparisons, asking questions, predicting, visualising, looking for clues, checking that what they read make sense.
• the ability to give an insightful analysis of the effectiveness of what they read using an in-depth understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammatical terminology.
• the ability to find and summarise information.
In this session, we look at how technological tools can assist teachers and students in being able to do this.

Basic Skills in Presentations
PowerPoint, which can be found on two hundred and fifty million computers around the world, is software used widely in the classroom. It allows you to arrange text and graphics in a series of pages, which you can project, slide by slide from a laptop computer onto a screen, or print as a booklet. It is also often used by pupils to present work. This session covers basic PowerPoint features and those that help you use the tool creatively. We also look at the Google App Slides and how that can be used to foster collaboration in the classroom.
