Mindplay and Exact Path

The 4th grade teachers understand the workload of each of our students. We also understand the significance of having the extra resources of Mindplay and Exact Path and what these programs can do for each student. With those things in mind, we have tried to lighten the load for students. 4th graders started a new schedule last Thursday, October 29th where students in targeted classes will only come to their targeted class two times a week. Our goal is that your student would spend that time back working in Mindplay and Exact Path.

The expectation is that every 4th grader spends 60 minutes a week working in Exact Path either on their specific Learning Path or on an assignment assigned by the teacher. The work that students do in Exact Path will be used in the gradebook.

The expectation for Mindplay is just like other courses within the OLS. Each 4th grader is assigned lessons with specific due dates in the OLS. They will be need to be completed just like all other course work. You will notice Mindplay showing up on the Bison On Track Calendar.

If you have questions, please reach out to your 4th graders teacher.

Teacher Graded Assignment (TGA)

Each quarter, your student will complete two Teacher Graded Assignments (TGA), one in ELA and another in Math. Since the majority of your student's work is done on the OLS, the TGA's offer the teachers a chance to see our student's learning. For the 2nd quarter, we are trying something different. We are going to start using a very popular program called Seesaw. It is a very user friendly program. We will be posting the 2nd quarter TGA's in Seesaw. They will both be due by November 16th at 5:00 pm.

Please be aware that TGA's and assessments make up 30% of your student's grade. You can refer to the Grading Category Weights below.

Course Information

ELA

We are starting the novel "Pax" by Sara Pennypacker. This book came with your other k12 supplies.

Students will describe the setting (where and when it takes place, or descriptive) of a text. Students will describe the plot (sequence of events or actions) of a text. Students will describe characters (protagonist-central character/antagonist-character who stands directly opposed to the protagonist) of a text. Students will describe the characterization (the creation or construction of a character) in a text. Students will describe the theme (central meaning) of a text. Students can explore the concept of character development through focused experiences with picture books. The class searches the text and illustrations for cues to character development and uses a graphic organizer to complete a structured analysis of character in the picture books.

Please have your student read at least 20 minutes everyday.

Math

We will be moving into multiplication. Students will be exploring different strategies for multiplying 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers and 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers.

Learning Coaches, please be aware that the OLS has some "different" strategies for multi-digit multiplication. We will be teaching a variety of methods. What works for one student may not work for another so we want to give each student a strategy that makes sense to them.

Please have your student practice their multiplication facts everyday.

Continue Multiplication Practice

It is vital for our fourth graders to know how to multiply. Division, fractions, perimeter, area, etc. are all built off of multiplication. There are many strategies out there to support your fourth grader in mastering this skill. 4th graders are expected to know multiplication facts between 0-12. This means they know from 0 x 0=0 all the way to 12x12=144.

Spend 20 minutes each school day working on multiplication facts this school year.
