Dear Parents,
After school homework help is available Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00-4:00. Please ask your child to bring home a form that can be turned in at the office. Can you believe it...we are nearing the end of the 1st quarter on October 27th. All late work and retakes must be completed by Friday, October 20th.
ENGLISH
6th Grade: Students will get their first spelling test back on Monday. We will continue our spelling practice, IXL, and Read-Aloud of The Graveyard Book. Reading Log #4 is due on Friday; please check for self-selected books coming home! Late work and retakes are due by Friday, October 20th.
7th Grade: Students will get their first spelling test back on Monday. We will continue our spelling practice and IXL throughout the week. We will also continue to read and discuss Cole’s journey in Touching Spirit Bear. Ask your child about the book! Reading Log #4 is due on Friday; please check for self-selected books coming home! Late work and retakes are due by Friday, October 20th.
8th Grade: We are continuing our studies of the Hero’s Journey and working on essays for the “My Personal Michigan Hero” essay competition. Next week’s grammar focus will be on pronouns and review of nouns, articles, and adjectives. The end of the marking period is approaching quickly and the last day I will accept late/missing assignments is Friday, October 20th.
SOCIAL STUDIES
6th Grade: We are going to create maps for different purposes. We are also going to identify regions and explain how precipitation changes at different latitudes.
7th Grade: We are going to create maps for different purposes. We are also going to identify regions and explain how precipitation changes at different latitudes.
8th Grade: This week we started looking at the philosophy behind the Constitution, studied the Articles of Confederation and the students presented their projects from Unit 1. If a student did not get their presentation done by Monday, then they lost the presentation points, which is 5 points out of the possible 20 points. There are no additional lost points for lateness but if they did not turn in the assignment by Friday, it would be a zero in the grade book starting Monday. They have a Unit project due the day after the test with every unit. I anticipate the next unit will be approximately 3-4 weeks. It’s quite a heavy unit with the study of the Constitution.
MATH
6th Grade: We are learning all about factors and multiples. This would be a great time to have your child practice their math multiplication facts while riding in the car or with flash cards. We will have a quiz next week Tuesday on finding the greatest common factor and least common multiple of a pair of numbers.
7th Grade: We had a quiz on Friday and any retakes can take place if your child has all prior homework completed for that chapter. This week we will continue to learn about integer multiplication and division and how the order of operations applies when solving expressions. Examples include withdrawing money every week for a expenses and depositing paychecks into checking accounts.
8th Grade: 8th grade has been busy working on writing numbers in scientific notation. We will have a quiz on Monday. Next we will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using scientific notation. Our test over module 2 will be Thursday.
SCIENCE
6th Grade: We are continuing our study of Ecosystems with learning about wildlife habitats. We are also going to be working in small groups to research, identify, and label food webs in different Michigan Ecosystems.
7th Grade: We had a quiz on Thursday about measuring wave amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and speed. Now, we will investigate wave properties such as reflection, refraction, and diffraction.
8th Grade: We are working on our Weather Projects. Students were to pick 3 types of projects from a menu and complete them by Friday October 13th. Full credit will only be given to projects turned in on or before the due date.
SINCERELY,
The Middle School Team
