October Book Report
The genre students should read is mystery and the assignment is a book review. The paper coming home today explains the assignment on one side and has space for the assignment on the other.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Week in Review
- Content Knowledge: What can we discover in the landscape of the Southwest? Students identified the states that make up the southwest and also described what you would see in a landscape. From there we predicted that we might read about snakes, lizards, cacti and deserts!
- Comprehension Skill: Author's Purpose
- Spelling: Long e - Using given spelling words, students sorted their words based on the long vowel pattern. Students also completed activities on Spelling City. Students identified the definition and part of speech in order to write sentences for their words.
- Conventions: Compound sentences - Students differentiated between simple and compound sentences by looking for a comma and a conjunction.
- Writing: Friendly Letter - Students chose a familiar person to write a friendly letter to. Their letters were focused around a main idea and included the five parts of a friendly letter: heading, salutation, body, closing and signature.
Math
- Subtract larger numbers - Using the standard algorithm and regrouping, students subtracted multi-digit whole numbers
- Subtract across zeros - Students used regrouping or compensation to subtract across zeros.
- Problem solving: Reasoning - Using a bar diagram and a letter for the unknown, students identified the steps they needed to take to solve a word problem.
- Test Review - We will take a test on addition and subtraction strategies on Tuesday.

To help you stay organized
- NEW - Word Study notebooks will come home each Monday and should be returned to school each day. Students will use them for word study practice and for their word study test on Friday.
- I will check my email each morning before 8:10am, again during specials at 10:05 and during recess & lunch at 12:05. If you need to reach me outside of these times, please call the school at 610-719-0240. You can also leave a message with Ms. Robyn.
- Students will bring their green communication folders and their assignment books each night & should return them to school the following day. When students arrive to school in the morning, they are responsible for putting them in the blue bin by the white board. This will help me gather important paperwork.
- Binders will primarily be kept at school. We will use them to organize classwork and projects. They will be sent home on occasion and should always be returned the following day.
