Reading Before Screening- Schoolwide Reading Incentive Program
North Wales Elementary School challenges themselves to read before they spend time on the screen.
Here is your mission…
North Wales will read 70,000 pages from Friday, March 24 through Friday, April 28, 2023.
Students will have a goal to read or be read to for 20 minutes per day. When a book is completed, record the number of pages and have a parent sign the recording slip. Each grade level will try to “LEVEL UP” by meeting goals along the way. As reading goals are met, your race car will progress along the track! Check the board to see how your grade level is performing.
Don’t forget…When you finish a book, record it on a slip and turn it in to your teacher.
Please review the details for our incentive program. Please help us reach 70,000 pages

Cultural Highlights For The Week
Women's History Highlight
Chien-Shiung Wu is the kind of science genius that Google Doodles dreams are made of: The Chinese-born, American-trained physicist worked on the Manhattan Project, which helped the United States develop the atomic bomb during World War II. She also performed game-changing experiments in physics that disproved the law of conservation of parity.
In 1975, she became the first female president of the American Physical Society.
Deemed the “Chinese Marie Curie” for her wide breadth of work, Wu once remarked, “There is only one thing worse than coming home from the lab to a sink full of dirty dishes, and that is not going to the lab at all.”
World Down Syndrome Day- March 21st
Every year, on March 21, people all around the world Rock their Socks to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. March 21 is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Since there are three 21s, World Down Syndrome day is March 21st (3/21).
Ramadan - March 22nd
This year, Ramadan begins on the evening of Wednesday, March 22nd and ends the evening of Friday, April 21st or Saturday, April 22nd, depending on the positioning of the moon.
- Ramadan is the most important month on the Islamic calendar. Most of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims observe this holy month each year.
- It is the Muslim month of fasting, which means no food or water.
- People fasting only eat before the sun rises and after the sunsets: The meal taken before sunrise is Suhoor and the meal taken after sunset is Iftar. Children are not obligated to fast until they reach puberty but some choose to observe it in preparation for their adulthood.
- Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars — or duties — of Islam, along with the testimony of faith, prayer, charitable giving, and making a pilgrimage to Mecca.
- Ramadan is a month for generosity and giving. It is known as a month of simplicity and a time to remember those who are less fortunate.
- The new moon determines the start of Ramadan. The starting date depends on a lunar calendar that doesn't match up with the solar calendar.
- Muslims all over the world regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or race participate in fasting for the entire month of Ramadan.
Smart Watch/ Cell Phone Reminder
We have seen a growing number of students using electronic devices and sending/receiving text messages throughout the day, which has disrupted the learning environment. Please note, cell phones should be in silent mode or turned off and stored in bookbags throughout the day. Smartwatches should not be used to make calls, send messages, or take photos/videos during the school day. Also, note the school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal electronic devices. Our school team will be reminding our students of these expectations regarding personal devices.
We thank all of our families for their continued support and cooperation in limiting disruptions to the classroom.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
