The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
June 1, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
Education is more than academics. It is also about teaching to the whole child, including social and emotional growth. Throughout any school year, students are bound to face conflict in social situations and at varying levels. Unfortunately, at the end of the school year some of these experiences can become more frequent.
As a staff, our goal is to support students throughout the school year to ensure all students feel safe in order to access a positive learning environment. It's important that we also teach students that it's not always possible to avoid conflict. However, as adults we must help them build their skill set in how to approach and handle difficult situations.
Seeking help from a trusted adult can also be difficult for some students to access as they are learning to differentiate between protecting friendships, avoiding tattling, or presenting a sign of weakness to their peers. It's important that educators partner with parents in teaching and reinforcing strategies to access help when they are facing a problem they can't solve on their own. Part of the teaching is also around students advocating for themselves and others.
I wanted to introduce a few strategies we are currently teaching students to access when they face conflict. One strategy is Stop, Walk, and Talk which allows students to respond to the behavior and reinforces leaving the situation and talking to a trusted adult. Another tool is Kelso's Wheel which offers a selection of options for students to try on their own before asking an adult for help. Attachments with both of these tools are listed below for your access as well.
We will continue to reteach and introduce additional strategies school-wide in the coming year. As we do so, look for updates on strategies and tools for students to add to their toolkit in addressing conflict-resolution.
It is important that we continue to support each and every student, while partnering with parents, to teach students resiliency, self-advocacy, and conflict-resolution strategies. We know that conflict between students will never be completely eliminated, but we want to provide the tools and strategies for lifelong learning.
Thank you for your partnership and for sharing all of your children with us.
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain
Principal

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders
The safety of all children is our number one priority at Cedar Mill Elementary School. EVERYONE must do their part to assure the safety of our children. Because the size of our drop-off and pick up area is so limited, parking lot rules designed to minimize safety issues must be strictly followed. Staff will always be available to assist individuals unfamiliar with our drop-off and pick-up routine. PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF CHILDREN EARLIER THAN 8:10 AM and ALWAYS drop off and pick up students in the designated area of the parking lot. Cars arriving before 8:10 are expected to park in a space (not along the curb) to allow room for buses to enter the parking lot and avoid creating congestion on Cornell Rd.
Thanks for ensuring safety of our students and surrounding community.
Art Night Thanks
A huge thanks to last month's Art Night Chairs: JaNea Neff, Valerie Ristau and Luana Smith. It was a wonderful family event with an opportunity for students to create and explore the Inuit culture and artwork. Additional thanks to the other parents who also assisted with the event: Aleida Adams, Carolyn Blank, Devri Donnelly, Kristen Haslebacher, Laura Jensen, Lisa Kojiro, Kyle Kojiro, Karla Micciche, Elaine Nelson, Kylan Pimley, Natasha Seifert, Lisa Taylor, Tammy Yashar, and Jenny Yeh. Thanks again!
Field Day Information
The students have been divided into four teams for each class. The teams are: the Blue Team, Red Team, White Team, and Green Team. Please check with your child as to which team he/she is on. (Teams will be announced during the week of June 5th.) If possible please have your child wear a shirt in their team's color on June 14th.
At the conclusion of the day's events, popsicles will be given out to all the students.
Please note that Field Day is not a spectator event. Only volunteers with assigned duties should attend.
Sincerely,
Chris Marino

Cedar Mill Summer Office Hours
A Special Message from your Cedar Mill Elementary PTC Board
Thanks to your generous donations to our annual Fun Run, the PTC Board in conjunction with feedback from teachers will be supplying the bulk school supplies needed for the 2018-2019 school year.
Buying many items* in bulk not only reduces the overall cost, but ensures consistency in quality and availability to ALL students. Additionally, it will allow teachers to build class sets of non-consumable items such as scissors to reduce the amount of waste from purchasing these items year-over-year.
To make school supply shopping easier we are also continuing to offer on-line ordering of school supplies through schoolKidz. Your order will be delivered to Cedar Mill Elementary School and available for pick up on Aug 23 at the Stop, Drop & Smile open house.
You can find the list of school supplies parents/guardians are to supply in the attachment, as well as ordering details from schoolKidz. The list will also be published on the school website. If you choose not to use schoolKidz, supplies can be dropped off at your student’s classroom at Stop, Drop, & Smile or on the first day of school.
Sincerely,
Cedar Mill Elementary PTC Board
*see the attachment for the list of items.
Fun Run Corporate Sponsorship
Thanks so much for supporting the Fun Run at Cedar Mill last September. With your help we were able to raise record funds for the school and complete the Makerspace.
Once again this year the PTC is looking at using our corporate sponsorship support around the Fun Run to fund a special need at the school and featured project. Principal Amy Chamberlain has identified an important path for our school to create future-ready InnovatED Classrooms at Cedar Mill. The attached sponsorship packet outlines all the details and includes photos of the project. The “hardware” is essentially a large flat screen TV on a cart that integrates directly with both teacher and student iPads in the classroom. It allows for all sorts of innovative and student-led learning and teaching opportunities.
Volunteers Kylan Pimley and Lee Carson visited Oak Hills Elementary earlier this spring with Amy Chamberlain where each classroom has this set-up. Our Cedar Mill educators are excited to have the same opportunities at our school.
We already have a handful of repeat sponsors committing again this year, and we hope you’ll join us (and help spread the word among parents!) this year too! We’re asking for commitment by June 15, largely because we want our teaching staff to have the chance to get systems up and running over the summer with their classroom.
Registration forms went home with students last week, but if you need an electronic version, email waysandmeans@cedarmillptc.org if you have questions!
Thank you for your support!

SBAC Testing
The administration of our state assessment will take place between now and June 8th.
Beginning this year, state test scores are available in ParentVUE! You will be able to see your child’s test results sooner than in prior years with less impact on the environment. For the English Language and Math tests, a student’s score is available in ParentVUE two weeks after both parts of the test are completed. Science test scores are available in Parent VUE three days after the test is completed. The Testing Information tab in ParentVUE has links to additional information about your child’s scores. If you need assistance activating a ParentVUE account, please contact your child’s school.
Students whose parents/guardians do not have an active ParentVUE account will receive a paper report of test scores. Paper score reports will be sent home with students on the last day of school. Score reports will be mailed over the summer for students with test results that arrive after the paper score reports are printed in June. Students with at least one parent/guardian with ParentVUE access may request a printed report by contacting Kay Jenkins by email at kay_jenkins@beaverton.k12.or.us or by phone at 503.356.4594.
