On Thursday 16th March our school will be closed due to all of our teachers being members of the NZEI (teachers’ union) and electing to join other education sector workers in striking against the offers we have received from the government. I apologise for the short notice, but unfortunately the NZEI only made the decision to strike this afternoon.
While I am disappointed in the lack of notice they have given us, I fully support the teachers asking for a better deal. What the government has offered in no way compensates for the dramatic increases in the cost of living that we are all facing. I know that everyone is having to deal with the costs of living, but the facts of the matter are that fewer and fewer people are wanting to become teachers. This is already impacting our education system and will continue to do so in the years ahead if we don’t do anything about the working conditions and pay.
