Curriculum Corner
Writing
This week, we will continue reading A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher. Focus this week will be on how writers begin writing. Often, their ideas start with a list or a rough idea that they aren't ready to share with anyone, but they jot them down in their Writer's Notebooks so they can remember them for later.
Reading
We didn't get to The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo last week, but we will definitely begin this week! We will also set up a reading notebook space so they will have the opportunity to practice skills learned while reading the fiction book that I've asked them to keep at their desk to read independently. I will be conferencing with students individually to help them apply these skills.
We will also begin using our Reach for Reading series this week. Our first unit uses the theme of culture to teach main idea and details through fiction and nonfiction text.
Please help your child remember to read at home for a minimum of 20 minutes per day for 3 days each week. Each student has a reading log to keep track of his/her reading.
Language Arts
Today, I began introducing Wordly Wise Unit 2. 2A & 2B will be due on Thursday and our test will be next Friday, 9/9.
Math
We will continue working on unit 1 this week and will focus on estimation strategies, story problems, and addition.
Indiana History
We will continue learning about map skills this week including: Indiana's geography, latitude and longitude, and applying the skills they have learned to maps. They will have a test on Friday over what we have learned so far.
- Naming continents
- Naming oceans
- Naming specific lines of latitude and longitude (Equator, Prime Meridian, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle)
- Identifying hemispheres, map key, and compass rose
- Locating Indiana on a US Map
- Indiana & Its Neighbors
- Indiana Geography
All of this can be found in your student's interactive notebook for Indiana History. I will encourage students to bring this home to study!
