THE SKY NEEDS STARS
NUDGE: ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUME 13
Dear Roberts,
There is a great line we all have heard, “You don’t want to know how the sausage is made”. This line refers to process, while ignoring the process of how sausage was made. We are living in a time and age where people actually do want to know how our food is made. What does it mean to savor the process? The old way of thinking was the process of doing something was just for yourself or for your own internal struggles. You don’t show people what is behind the curtains!
Think about the foodie movement, everything is about sustainable, natural, and grass fed beef. People do want to know if their chicken was free range or caged. We are living in an age where, if your food is made well and the process is good, it makes the food taste even better.
The story of how we infuse learning throughout the minds of our students is almost as important of how our parents feel about our school. We have to love the whole process not just the results. We have to boldly and unashamedly show our work. Scoop up the scraps and the residue of your process and shape them into what we call learning. Sometimes the process does not taste good, because it exposes and reveals our failures. When we are vulnerable and willing to show our work, we open doors for feedback and learning. This school believes you can move from mediocre to great in increments.
Our work is based on doing a few things with precision, which is harnessing the gradual release model, daily checking real time data, honing in on small group instruction, and systematically intervening when students struggle. This is our process/system in our story. Yes, be proud to show your work. Our process may not always look pretty, but at the end of the day, we always provide a beautiful product.
Thank you for showing your work to the world,
Jorly

T-TESS 2.1 Achieving Expectations
As we walked through your classrooms focusing on classroom environment, routines and procedures, we have many celebrations and are proud of the solid foundation you have built in your classrooms to begin working towards our instructional focus. Productive classroom environments, routines and procedures do not happen by accident and your effort does not go unnoticed. Continue to deliberately practice and revisit expectations and make adjustments as necessary.
Beginning Wednesday, as we walk through your classrooms we will be focused on T-TESS Dimension 2.1: Achieving Expectations (The teacher supports all learners in their pursuit of high levels of academic and social-emotional success), another step in personalizing small group instruction. As you work towards our instructional focus, you must establish a learning environment that supports and motivates students to do their personal best.
