Welcome Back to the 2022-2023 School Year!

We hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable summer! We are looking forward to another great school year and working with all students! The Guidance Counselors will support student academic performance by providing social/emotional, academic and career interventions. Guidance Seminars will take place throughout the school year. The seminar schedule for this year is as follows:


September: SENIORS/Post-Secondary Planning

All students are welcome to make an appointment to speak with their guidance counselor at anytime. Students may visit the Guidance Office to request an appointment or complete the Guidance Appointment Request Form.


Students and parents are encouraged to sign up for their guidance counselor's Remind.com. Remind allows the counselors to text students/parents through an online platform. Instructions on how to sign up for remind.com are available here.

GUIDANCE TIMELINE GRADES 9-12

Although the college application process begins in the spring of the junior year, there are things students and parents can be doing along the way to be prepared. The Guidance Timeline will provide parents/caregivers an overview of expectations for each school year. The tasks that students should complete each school year is outlined, the schedule for Guidance Seminars and a schedule of post-secondary planning activities. This timeline will help students and parents stay on track and know what to expect each school year!

AP Exam Information

All students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses will be taking the corresponding exams in May 2023. The exams will be given at Pembroke High School May 1-12. The exact dates of each exams and registration information will be sent home in a letter next week. The cost of each AP Exam is $97 and is due by November 4, 2022. Any student that qualifies for reduced/free lunch or are in need of financial assistance may contact Mrs. Conathan in the guidance office.

SENIOR UPDATE

Senior Seminars have been scheduled for all seniors September 13th-23rd. Students may view their specific seminar dates by logging into Enriching Students. Every senior will have two seminars scheduled over a two week period. During this time, the guidance counselors will discuss the college application process in detail and provide a Naviance demo so they know exactly what they need to do in order to complete and submit their college applications, request letters of recommendation and transcripts.


All seniors were given the Junior College Checklist in the spring and hopefully collegebound students completed the tasks on the list during the spring/summer.

College Planning Night!

The Guidance Counselors will host a College Planning Night on Thursday, September 22nd at 6:30 PM in the PHS Auditorium. Seniors & Parents are encouraged to attend. We will review the information that students received during their Senior Seminars, demonstrate how to use Naviance, provide an overview of the Common Application and have a Q&A session.

PHS COLLEGE FAIR

The PHS Guidance Department will host a College Fair on Wednesday, September 28th from 7:45 am - 8:45 am in the gymnasium. Juniors will attend the fair from 7:45-8:15 and Seniors will attend from 8:15 - 8:45. Click the link below to view the list of college/universities that have registered to attend the college fair. Please note: The colleges/universities that are attending the college fair are subject to change.


Students are encouraged to view the list of attendees and prepare a list of questions to ask the representatives. The college fair is a great opportunity for students to meet admission counselors and learn more about colleges of interest. For suggestions of questions to ask please review this helpful document.

Save the Date! Financial Aid Webinar

A Financial Aid Webinar will take place on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 6:30 PM hosted by Jodi Conway. The webinar will cover the financial aid application process, including a discussion of the FAFSA and CSS Profile applications and tips to successfully guide you through the entire process. Financial aid expert, Jodi Conway will show you how to create a timeline to meet your college's financial aid deadlines and discuss student loan debt, the different types of aid you might see on your award letters, merit aid, and how/when to appeal an award. Jodi Conway has worked in the financial aid profession for over 36 years, both in college financial aid offices and with her business, Conway College Aid. It is her mission to share this information with families to educate them about the complicated financial aid process. A registration link will be emailed directly to parents in October.

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION

FAFSA:

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid Form will be available on October 1, 2022. This form is completed by current and prospective college students to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. Completing the form can qualify students for federal grants, loans and & work study programs.


For financial aid information and support, the Massachusetts Education Financing Authority can provide may useful resources for parents and students. The MEFA's Guide to Financial Aid is a helpful document that will provide an overview of everything you need to know regarding Financial Aid. Click below to download the pdf document.


CSS PROFILE:

The College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS Profile) is an application for college financial aid required by approximately 300 (mainly private) colleges and universities. The CSS profile is administered and maintained by the College Board.

Meet our Guidance Intern!

Mackenzie McDonald will work under the guidance of Kerran Goff as a Guidance Counseling intern on Wednesday's and Friday's for the 2022-2023 school year. Mackenzie is a 2016 PHS graduate and is currently enrolled in a School Counseling Program at Cambridge College. Mackenzie will graduate this spring with a Masters degree in School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling (LMHC, M.Ed). She also graduated with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Communications from Nichols College in 2020 where she also played field hockey. This summer, she began a 3 semester long internship supervised by a school social worker at the South Shore Educational Collaborative working with students on the autism spectrum in individual, small group and classroom settings. Mackenzie is also in her third year of coaching the Pembroke Varsity Field Hockey team. She is a welcomed addition to the Pembroke High School Guidance Department and is looking forward to advocating for PHS students emotional, physical and mental wellbeing!
