Compass Charter Schools will be closed today in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Today, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s dedication to ensuring equality and justice for all. Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister and social activist who led the Civil Rights Movement in the mid-1950s. Through his activism, he gave several memorable speeches and led countless peaceful marches to end segregation in the United States.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
AVID ~ To help scholar’s motivation levels, it is a good idea to develop both short term and long term goals. For scholars to work toward and truly accomplish their goals, they must take the time to write them down and think them through. Scholars can also create an action plan to achieve their goals. Use this link to access a template for the creation of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Timely) as well as a goal setting outline. These tools will help clarify scholar’s objectives and give clarity to daily activities as they work to achieve their goals.
END OF SEMESTER REMINDER ~ The last day to submit assignments is next Wednesday, January 30 at 11:59 pm. Teachers will be available that day until 5 pm. Please make sure to reach out with any last minute questions prior to then. Good luck! We know all of our high school scholars will finish semester 1 strong!

SAMARITAN AWARD FOR SPRING 2019 ~ CCS invites all scholars to partake in community service. There are endless opportunities, and your College & Career Readiness Counselor can provide resources to get started. You may volunteer anywhere you choose.
CCS recommends all scholars to actively participate in community service in a way that positively impacts their local city. In fact, research shows that participating in altruistic activities such as community service is linked with overall happiness. Also, this is a wonderful activity to include on resumes for jobs and/or college applications.
CCS will be awarding our Samaritan Awards at the end of the school year to scholars who submit a log of 50 or more hours of community service to Ms. Olson, our College & Career Readiness Counselor, at molson@compasscharters.org.
WEEKLY CAREER SPOTLIGHT ~ To guide scholars in career exploration, the Counseling Services Department will provide a weekly spotlight on various careers over the next 15 weeks. Each week will focus on one of the 15 California Industry Sectors. This week’s spotlight is on careers within the Agriculture and Natural Resources sector. Click on the links below to discover more about each career. Also, check out California Career Zone for more career exploration!
WEEKLY SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) SPOTLIGHT ~ Every day the average person speaks at least 7,000 words and this doesn't even account for the messages we send with our nonverbal communication. Join us in viewing this week's video spotlight that looks at how these nonverbal cues or signals are equally as important as what we verbalize.

EXCEPTIONAL SCHOLAR SERVICES
FEATURED WEBINAR ~ Fractions in the Real World: Time and Money
Fractions can be a painful topic for scholars (and their families). Learning about fractions sometimes means funny rules that don’t make sense and work that is not connected to the real world. In reality, fractions are part of our everyday lives, even when fractional numbers do not appear. In addition, EVERYTHING we do in mathematics should make sense, including fractions. This two-part series of edWebinars will highlight fractions in our everyday lives. The January session is this Wednesday, January 23 at 1 pm, and will focus on time and money, while the February session will focus on sharing and scaling.
FEATURED WEBINAR ~Turning Test-Prep Angst Into Confidence Through Deep Learning and Student Agency
Participants in this webinar this Thursday, January 24 at noon will leave the session with a better understanding of how to use technology in the classroom; personalize instruction to engage every scholar and then differentiate learning content, process, and environment to meet their individual needs; and finally, how to foster student’s own understanding of their learning process throughout every lesson.
